Information is considered reliable. PW was cooperative, and seemed to be fairly well informed.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
4 Sep 50: Conscripted in PYONGYANG and attended Officer’s Training School.
15 Sep 50: Graduated OTS as a Jr Lt.
17 Sep 50: Left PYONGYANG for SEOUL and attached to Supply Platoon of the 4th Bn, 2nd Regt, 31 Div as a Supply Officer.
27 Sep 50: 31st Div retreated to CHIPPOLI. (芝浦里)
4 Oct 50: Arrived in CHIPPOLI where unit was enveloped by UN forces. 31st Div wäs routed. PW fled N about 16 kms and surrendered to ROK troops.
Unit Organization & Strength:
31 Div was composed of 3 Regts which in turn had 3 Bns each, and each Bn had 3 Cos. There were four platoons attached directly to the 31st Div, the Engr, 120 mm Cannon, 45 mm cannon, and the 82 mm mortar plats. PW’s supply platoon was a sub-unit of the 4th Bn. There were about 2,000 men in the 2nd Regt, 650 men in a Bn.
Last Known Composition of Unit:
There were 650 men in PW’s 4th Bn, however there were only 200 remaining when last seen at CHIPPOLI
Equipment:
4th Bn - 3 × 82 mm mortars; 2 × 45 mm cannons; 3 × HMG and 6 × self propelled guns.
Unit Duties:
2nd Regt was a Rear Guard Unit. PW’s supply platoon supplied men in the 4th Bn.
Unit History:
7 Sep 50: 31st Brig was organized with 3000 men making up 6 Bns.
5 Oct 50: 31st Brig adding 3000 more men to its unit changed from a Brig to a Div, having 3 Regts, consisting of 3 Bns each. This was organized in CHIPPOLI.
10 Oct 50: 31st Div was routed by artillery fire and air attacks
Communication:
Troop movements were carried out on mountain roads at night due to air attacks during the day.
Intentions:
The 31st Div intended to retreat to PYONGYANG and defend the area at all costs. However, before they arrived the Div was routed.
Personalities:
4 Bn CO, HONG, Kwan Sok, Maj, age - 22. Formerly of the Man - churian army.
Morale & Propaganda:
Morale was low due to the lack of weapons, and training, PW never saw nor heard of propaganda leaflets.
4. GENERAL:Foreign Elements:
On 19 Sep 50 at SEOUL, PW saw 5 Russian advisors at the army headquarters. PW heard from a Jr Lt working in the Hq that the Russian advisors were there chiefly to advise the NKA on operations & military strategy. They were civilian clothing.
