PW was cooperative, but information was very limited. Information considered fairly reliable.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
25 Jul 50 - Conscripted at HAEJU (海州).
26 Jul 50 PW and five others arrived at PYONGYANG, went to OCS for 15 days and graduated as Jr Lt.
Jul 50 -Arrived at KUMCHON, assigned to Engr Co, 3rd Bn, 635 unit and trained his platoon on the fundamentals of engineering (Repairing Roads), for 20 days.
Aug 50 - 635 unit moved down toward INCHON (仁川) intending to take defensive positions, however, the unit encountered UN forces. 635 unit retreated to KUMCHON.
Sept 50 - The battalions of the 635 unit separated and the 3rd Bn took defensive positions near KUMCHON, dispositions of other battalions unk.
Oct 50 - 3rd Bn encountered UN forces.
15 Oct 50 - PW voluntarily surrendered to UN forces.
Original Organization & Strength:
PW stated that the 635 unit was composed of three bns and one independent Co, and had been organized at KUMCHON in Aug 50.
3rd Bn was composed of seven companies and five independent platoons which were attached directly to the Bn.
The independent platoons were the communications, anti-tank, supply, sniper and anti-aircraft platoons. Approx 70 men to platoon. Strength of the 3rd Bn was approx 700 men. PW’s knowledge of the 635 unit was limited only to the 3rd Bn. 3rd Bn had quarters.
Actual Battle Organization & Strength:
PW believed that 50% of the 3rd Bn were casualties due to engagements, air bombardments and desertion.
