3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
2 Aug 50: While attending college, was conscripted into the army and sent to a hospital in CHONGJIN.
4 Aug 50: Sent to NANAM, where he treated wounded soldiers.
14 Aug 50: Ordered to PYONGYANG, where he was commissioned Sr Lt. Sent to 19th Div, 348th unit in SUKCHON where he was assigned as a doctor in a Div hospital.
19 Sep 50: Left SUKCHON for CHANGDAN as the 348th unit (or 47th Regt) was ordered to, battle there. Arrived CHANGDAN 25 Sep 50.
2 Oct 50: Unit retreated to KEJONG.
18 Oct 50: The UN forces enveloped KUMCHON from the N and S, PW and many others changed quickly to farmer clothing and hid in a farm house. Surrendered to US forces.
Unit Strength:
There were about 500 men (mostly recruits) in the 348th unit. The 348th is a mechanized unit. There were 3 Bns, 1 Inf, 1 Tank and 1 Self Propelled Gun Bn.
Equipment:
There were 10 tanks assigned to the Tank Bn.
Unit Duties:
The 348th Unit was to defend the western banks of IMJIN River near CHANGDAN.
Unit History:
The 348th unit was organized o/a the 25th of Jul 50 at SUKCHON with men from farms andđ - industries.
19 Sep 50: The Unit moved from SUKCHON to CHANGDAN. At KEJONG they were attacked by UN fighter planes.
18 Oct 50: The unit was routed by UN Forces.
Dispositions:
The Unit Headquarters was located about 1 km E of the KEJONG RR Station in a mountain.
Personalities:
Medical Comdr; KIM, Kyu Chon, Capt; age - 24. Was a PYONGYANG Medical College graduate.
Morale and Propaganda:
Morale was low. Many men had no idea what they were fighting for. They were opposed to Russian influence and NK policy.
