Information is fairly reliable. Informant was cooperative but he was of low mentality.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
21 Apr 50 - In YONGIL, MANCHURIA, PW was conscripted while still attending the Communist Youth School and then sent to PYONGYANG and assigned to the 2nd Co, 3rd Bn, 97th Regt for training.
9 Sep 50 - In PYONGYANG, PW was commissioned Jr Lt and given the duty of platoon leader. He was commissioned because there were very few officers in PYONGYANG, all squad leaders at that time were commissioned Jr Lt.
28 Sep 50 - Left PYONGYANG for HAEJU by night train.
30 Sep 50 - Arrived HAEJU, 3 Bn was ordered to battle in PAEKCHON.
11 Oct 50 - Engaged in actual combat for first time. The action was so severe that PW deserted his post and hid in a house. In the meantime, the ROK troops overran the unit and captured him.
Unit Organization and Strength:
97th Regt was composed of 4 Bns (Inf). Each Bn had 4 companies. The 97th was an independent Regt not attached to any division. There were 133 men in a company and six officers.
Equipment:
There were 2 x 45-mm Mortars in the 3rd Bn.
Automatic rifles - 11 to a Co. LMG’s - 12 to a Co.; hand grenades - 15 to a Co,
Unit Duties:
Defend PAEKCHON.
Disposition of Unit:
3rd Bn Hq was about 8 km W of PAEKCHON in a small village.
Communications:
Used runners to send information to other battalions.
