2. ASSESSMENT:
Information is fairly reliable. PW was cooperative.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
7 Jul 50 - Volunteered for the Army. PW received basic training at HAEJU from 7 Jul to 8 Oct 50.
9 Oct 50 - Captured

Last Known composition of unit: (See TO Chart)
PW estimates about ½ of the men still remain in 1st Bn.

Equipment:
(1st Bn) HMG Co - 5 HMG’s; Arty Co - 2 Mortars; 45mm Plat - 1 x 45mm Cannon; AT Plat - 4 x AT Guns, and 1 truck, Equipment remaining - none.

Unit Duties:
74th Regt was ordered to defend HAEJU Bay from KANGNYONGNI to HAKSAN-Ni. PW’s unit, the 1st Bn was assigned to guard the shore from KANGNYUNGNI to YONDANGPO about 3km from HAEJU. 2nd and 3rd Bn guarded the sea coast from HAEJU eastward to HAKSEMNI.

Unit History:
74th Regt was formerly an Independent Inf Unit organized on the 1st of Jul 50 in HAEJU with about 180 men and 2 officers.
On 2 Oct 50, 74th Regt, which at this time had 3 Bns, was made up of recruits assigned to this unit from various basic training centers in NK. Officers, formerly of CCF, were assigned and the 44th Div was formed.
On 9 Oct 50, 1st Bn was committed in PAEKCHON and sustained losses from US artillery fire.

Dispositions:
The unit was to defend the RR bridge across the YESONG River, and moved to a small mountain about 5 km SE of PAEKCHON. There, they fought and lost. The 2nd and 3rd Bn’s, PW Believed, still defended the HAEJU Area, from YONGDANGPO to HAKSANNI.

Communications:
Telephones were used; code numbers were used when calling from Bn to Bn Hq. Ordinarily trucks were used for movement of troops.

Personalities:
Lt Col LEE, Tu Ik, CO 74th Regt, age- 41. Has been in RUSSIAN and taught at an officer’s training school there.
Lt Col Park, Chun Son, Regt Cultural Officer, 38. Instructor of Korean History at the P’YONGYANG Officer’s Training School.
Maj CHWAY, Hyong, CO 1st Bn, 37, formerly a soldier in the CCF at MANCHURIA.

Morale and Propaganda:
Morale of PW’s unit was low since they had very few weapons and little training.
Propaganda leaflets - PW and the officers of the Bn Hq doubted the propaganda leaflets, however, having no interest in the war, they had always been interested in deserting.

4. GENERAL:
Info on 74th Regt:
PW heard from the Bn Comdr that the 74th changed its unit No. to 66th Regt on 2nd Oct 50, after it became attached to the 44th Div. 74th Regt was replaced by a Guard Unit (u/k) after it left HAEJU.
