PW was very cooperative and intelligent. He deserted from the Army one month prior to his capture; consequently information is negligible. PW seemed extremely bitter towards communism. PW’s former 18th Inf Brig was redesignated the 18th Div in Jun 50.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
9 Jul 50 - Entered No 1 OCS in P’YONGYANG (平壤) and received 13 days arty basic training. Upon completion of the training, was commissioned a Jr Lt.
24 Jul 50 - Arrived at CH’ORWON (鐵原) with 30 other officers and assigned to 3rd Plat, 3rd Co, 82mm mortar Bn, 18th Ind Brig which was being activated at this time. He served as a plat ldr. Remained until 7 Aug 50.
8 Aug 50 - Brig arrived at SEOUL by train and troops received training until 15 Sep 50.
15 Sep 50 - 18th Ind Brig was redesignated as 18th Div at SEOUL.P PW was reassigned to Repair Plat, Maintenance Co, 2nd Regt, 18th Div and appointed as a repair plat ldr on 18 Sep 50 and served for only one day.
18 Sep 50 - Deserted the unit. went to his uncle’s home in SEOUL and stayed out of sight until 7 Oct 50. He deserted because of the INCH’ON landing and bitterness toward present NO Policies.
7 Oct 50 - Voluntarily gave himself up to a local police station.
Unit Organization and Strength:
18th Ind Brig, which was activated at CH’ORWON (鐵原) in the latter part of Jul 50, was composed of six (6) infantry Bns of 900 men each. One 120mm Ind Mortar Bn - 500 men and one 82mm Ind Mortar Bn - 400 men.
In addition to above bns, there was a AA Gun Co, Signal Co, Transportation Co, SMG Co, Command Plat, Medical center and rear section directly attached to the Brig. Strength of these units was not known.
PW stated that his 82mm Ind Mortar Bn was organized almost completely with untrained NK recruits between the ages of 19-30 except a few NCOs. PW stated that half of the troops in the Brig were former college and middle school students. He stated that practically all the available men between the ages of 19 and 35 were in the service at the time of his draft call.
Equipment:
Equipment in the 18th Ind Brig was not known except 82mm Ind Mortar Bn. He stated that the Bn was actually equipped with 24 x 82mm mortars, 27 x SMG and one rifle with 30 rounds of ammunition for each man.
As of 18 Sep 50 the 18th Division remained in the SEOUL-INCH’ON Areas as an occupation force.
