3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
28 Jul 50: Conscripted at KANTEILI.
31 Aug 50: Sent to KANDON GUN to receive NCO schooling for about 45 days.
16 Sep 50: Assigned to the 19th Div at SUKCHON.
19 Oct 50: 2nd Regt pulled back to the 38th parallel from the IMJIN River.
13 Oct 50: Deserted and surrendered to the UN Forces on 14 Oct 50.
Unit Organization and Strength:
19 Div, 2nd Regt (289 Unit) - 1,785 men.
Equipment:
Arty 120-mm, 76 & 45-mm, HMG, automatic rifles and rifles. (exact no. unk)
Unit History:
6 Sep 50: 2nd Regt of the 19 Div was believed to be newly organized at SUKCHON. All of the EM and most of the officers were recruits.
22 Sep 50: 2nd Regt was sent to the IMJIN River to hold defensive positions while the 1st and 3rd Regt stayed at SUKCHON.
27 Sep 50: 1st Regt arrived in the vicinity of KUMCHON while the 3rd Regt was sent to SOGAM about 24 km S of SUKCHON.
9 Oct 50: 2nd Regt pulled out of the IMJIN River area and went north of the 38th parallel.
13 Oct 50: 2nd Regt was ordered to retreat further north by trucks.
Communications:
Used telephones for communication between Bns and runners between Cos.
Morale and Propaganda:
The morale of the unit was very low and most of the men were ready to surrender if given the opportunity. PW saw a propaganda leaflet then surrendered to UN Forces.
4. GENERAL:Observed about 100 US PsW at SUAN on the night of 10 Oct 50 being taken to PYONGYANG by foot. They were guarded by N Korean soldiers.
Foreign Elements:
Observed about 3 Russian officers wearing military uniforms in the vicinity of the 19th Div during the month of Sep 50, at SUKCHON. The officers were inspecting the Div area as well as supervising training.
