LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:The 7th Co, 8th Regt was dug in on Hill 203, 5 Km SE of WAEGWAN, on 19 Sep 50. The Unit had been here since 17 Sep 50 and was surrounded by US Force. Location of other units unknown.
PEPSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:Inducted on 29 Jul 50 at SINUIJU.
Received 5 days training at SINUIJU.
Informant and 1,200 others reached WAEGWAN 15 Sep 50.
Of the 1,200 who departed SINUIJU on 4 Aug 50, 400 deserted at KUMCHON (NK) o/a 10 Aug 50.
At TAEJON on 26 lug 50, the troops from SINUIJU (800 men) were combined with 2,700 men from HAMHUNG and 600 men from HWANGHAE DO.
After reaching a point 5 Km NW of WAEGEAN, o/a 13 Sep 50 the 4,000 newly arrived troops were assigned to various units of 3rd Division.
PW and one other shot their squad loader and deserted their unit on 19 Sep 50, surrendered to US 5th Cav Regt, 1st Bn at 190900 K Sep 50.
REPLACEMENTS:O/a 13 Sep 50 2700 men from HAMHUNG, 800 men from SINUIJU, and 600 men from HWANGHAE DO joined the 3rd Division as replacements at a place 5 Km NW of WAEGWAN. These nearly arrived troops were issued arms here and were immediately sent to front lines. Replacements were said to have received 3 to 5 days training.
MORALE:Morale of the men in 8th Regiment was very low because they were inexperienced and did not want to fight. Many of them were deserting or looking for a chance to desert. Platoon am Squad leaders were trying to prevent desertion, but some shot their platoon and squad leaders and escaped.
