PW was in good physical condition, cooperative and sincere. He appeared intelligent. Information considered to be reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
23 Jul 50 - Inducted in the NKPA at P'YONGYANG (平壤) and assigned to 552 Ind Bn. Received 6 days of basic training.
4 Sep 50 - Arrived at YONJU (渶州) by train via KAESONG (開城), SEOUL, WONJU (原州), CHECH’ON (堤川) and TANYANG (丹陽). Although his unit (180 men) travelled by rail and it took about one month to arrive at YONGJU from P'YONGYANG as the trains occasionally stopped in tunnels to avoid air attacks. PW stated that the trains stopped in about 30 tunnels. Sometimes the train stopped in tunnels for 2 days. Ne losses sustained during the trip.
9 Sep 50 - Arrived at a point 20 km S of KUSAN-DONG (九山洞) by truck via ANDONG (安東) and UISONG (義城). He remained at this place but his unit moved to a point 2 km S of CHACH’ON-DONG (慈川洞).
15 Sep 50 - PW went as a replacement to the top of the SOK SIM SAN (石心山) Mountain, 10 km N of CHACH’ON-DONG and fought for 3 days.
18 Sep 50 - PW surrendered with a UN Leaflet.
Original Organization and Strength:
The 522nd Ind Bn was activated at P'YONGYANG with a strength of 180. He stated that the Bn was directly attached to the Ministry of War. The Bn was composed of an AT Co, Engr Co, a HMG Plt, and a Signal Plt.
Last Known Composition and Strength:
3 days prior to his capture, PW heard from his CO that total strength was only 70 men.
Equipment:
Engr Co - 300 AT mines
AT Co - 5 x 14.5-mm Siminov PTRS-41 AT Rifles
HMG Plt - 2 x Maxin HMG M1910
Signal Plt - Two radios.
Intentions:
The Bn’s mission was to garrison ANDONG, however, on arriving at ANDONG the Bn was converted into an infantry unit and sent to the place where PW was captured.
Personalities:
Bn CO - LEE, Kwang P’il (李光必) Col; Age 46. Heard from his platoon lender that LEE was once in the Chinese 8th Route Army.
Engr Co CO - KIM, Chong Bong (金正奉) (김정봉) Lt; Age 26.
4th Plt Ldr Engr Co - LEE, Yong Won (리영원) Jr Lt; (少尉)
Morale and Propaganda:
Morale was low due to lack of ammunition, food and trained troops.
