PW appeared to be fairly intelligent, however, ignorant of military matters due to short term of service. PW considered reliable by interrogator.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
20 Jul 50 - PW conscripted into NKPA at South SINUIJU. 1,500 conscripts (mostly farmers, ages 16-36, average age 25) received one month basic training using wooden rifles.
25 Aug 50 - PW believes 1,500 conscripts designated 574th Independent Regt at this time. 574th Ind Regt left South SINUIJU by rail.
27 Aug 50 - 574th Ind Regt arrived at P'YONGYANG (平壤) via YANGSI (楊市), SINUIJU (新義州), SUKCH'ON (肅川). Continued south by rail.
30 Aug 50 - 574th Ind Regt arrived at SEOUL via KAESONG (開城).
31 Aug 50 - 574th Ind Regt left SEOUL by rail. Arrived same day at WONJU (原州). Continued march by foot.
4 Sep 50 - 574th Ind Regt arrived ANDONG via highway through CHECH’ON (堤川), TANYANG (丹陽). 574th Ind Regt continued march in east direction along northern banks, NAKTONG River.
5 Sep 50 - 574th Ind Regt arrived at CH'ONG-SONG (靑城), continued south.
14 Sep 50 - 574th Ind Regt arrived in wooded area immediately north of IMP’O DONG (林浦洞) (12 km ESE of YONGCH’ON) over mountain roads through PUNAM-MYON (富南面) (1210-1490).
15-16 Sep 50 - 574th Inf Regt under ROK-US army artillery mortar fire and air interdiction. Showered with surrender Leaflets.
16 2400K Sep 50 - PW and one other from same unit deserted unit and fled to nearby hill. PW friend hit by rifle fire from unit area (unknown whether intentional or not).
