FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0867) 21 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative but not observant. PW was a replacement and had little information. His information may be considered fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
4 Jul 50 - PW was inducted at SARIWON (沙里院). PW received basic training for approx 20 days.
O/a 24 Jul 50 - Approx 700 men including PW departed SARIWON by train.
O/a 30 Jul 50 - The 700 men reached TONGHWA (同花) via SEOUL and YANGP’YONG (陽平). From here the 700 men marched south.
O/a 5 Aug 50 - The 700 men reached a point approx 8 km S of HAMCH’ANG (咸昌). The 700 men were assigned to the 2nd Bn, 3rd Regt, 1st Div.
O/a 10 Aug 50 - The 2nd Bn reached a point approx 24 km N of KUNWI (軍威). Here the 2nd Bn fought against the ROK troops for 3 days. PW estimated that the 2nd Bn suffered about 150 casualties.
O/a 18 Aug 50 - The 2nd Bn of the 3rd Regt reached HYORYONG-Myon (孝令面) (1156-1473). Here the 2nd Bn fought against the ROK troops for 15 days. The 2nd Bn received unknown number of replacements from N. KOREA. PW did not know the number of casualties in the 2nd Bn while they fought at HYORYONG-Myon.
O/a 3 Sep 50 - The 2nd Bn joined the other Bns of the 3rd Regt, 1st Div at KASAN (1156-1458).
O/a 15 Sep 50 - Approx 1,000 ROK troops attacked the N. Koreans at KASAN. PW was wounded.
PW deserted from his unit and his on a mountain for 2 days.
17 Sep 50 - PW surrendered to ROK troops at a point approx 1 km E of KASAN.

Last Known Composition of Unit:
PW estimated that approx 200 troops remained in the 2nd Bn, 3rd Regt, 1st Div as of 15 Sep 50. PW did not know how many troops were remaining in tbe other Bns of the 3rd Regt.

Armor:
PW did not see any tanks near KASAN. PW saw about 20 x T-34/85 tanks at a point appox 20 km NW of HAMCH’ANG o/a 2 Aug 50. These tanks were all parked along the road.

Intentions:
Objective of 1st Div was T’AEGU.

Morale and Propaganda:
Original troops had high morale but the morale of the replacements was low due to heavy casualties. Most of the troops in the 3rd Regt were replacements, except the officers and NCO’s. PW estimated that approx 60% of the replacements were S. Koreans who were conscripted into the NKPA.
PW stated that he surrendered after reading a Surrender Leaflet. The troops were told by the officers not to believe the contents of the Propaganda Leaflets.

4. GENERAL:
One N. Korean WON was ten S. Korean WON.
PW saw Red Cross Insignia on Hospital vehicles.
