ASSESSMENT:
Informant seems to be intelligent. Information seems reliable in view of the fact that the PW deserted his unit after his plt ldr's attempt to kill him.

T/O & E AND STRENGTH OF: Arty Regt, 2nd Div.
The Artillery Regt was composed of 1 x 76mm artillery gun bn, 1 x 76mm howitzer Bn and 1 x 122mm howitzer Bn.
Each Artillery Bn was composed of 1 x 76mm AT Company, 1 x 76mm howitzer company and 1 x 122mm howitzer company.
Each company was composed of 2 gun platoons and 1 observation and wireless platoon.
The companies were numbered from 1 to 9.

LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNIT:
The Division CP on 16 Sep 50 withdrew across the NAKTONG River. Present location unknown.
On 16 Sep 50, the Division artillery was located 10 kms West of CHANGNYONG and was preparing to retreat across the NAKTONG River.
The 4th, 6th, and 17th Inf Regts were disorganized and the troops fled to the mountains near CHANGNYONG in small groups. Some of the troops succeeded in crossing the NAKTONG. The Infantry troops lost a large percentage of their weapons during the retreat.

PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted 17 May 48 at CHONGPYONG GUN, and assigned to SECURITY GUARD TRAINING Unit of the 7th Regt. In May 49, the Security Guard Unit was officially designated the 2nd Div Arty. Between May 49 to May 50, the Arty Regt was daily trained by Russian officers, (One (1) Russian artillery expert to each company).
In May 50, the 2nd Div moved to HWACHON in preparation for war. On 23 June 50, the Division moved to KUMHWA.
The PW deserted his unit on 16 Sep 50, because his plt ldr tried to shoot him. He gave himself up to American troops on 18 Sep 50, 12 kms East of CHANGNYONG.

FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
When the troops of the 2nd Div crossed the NAKTONG River, they carried 5 days' food supply. (source of supply unknown). On 15 Sep 50, the 2nd Division's food supply was exhausted.
After crossing the NAKTONG River, the troops did not receive fresh ammo supplies. Most of the ammo, with the exception of small arms ammo carried by the troops, was lost during the retreat on 15 Sep 50.
The informant heard that the Division’s ammo supply was coming from KUMCHON.

ARMOR AND ARTILLERY:
On 29 Aug 50, the PW saw 30 x T-34 tanks, and 6 x SP Guns (SU-76) at KUNCHON.

MORALE:
Morale is very low because:
(1) Lack of food and ammo.
(2) Air Attacks.
(3) Increased casualties.

US PW’s:
About 6 US PW’s were seen at SANBONG NI o/a 3 Sep 50.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
The informant heard that some troops from the 2nd Div were dispatched to HAMHUNG to get winter supplies for the Division.
