PW seemed to be in good physical condition. He was a Student at the SINHUNG Univ, SEOUL when the city was captured by the NKPA. PW stated that he was always trying to escape from his unit and save his or his fellow soldier’s lives. Lacked military information. PW surrendered to ROK forces on 16 Sep 50. He stated that he saved 50 ROK soldiers from a surprise attack by alerting them before the attack. Not recommended for further interrogation.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
| 18 Aug 50: | Inducted in NKPA at KANGNUNG (江陵). Received one week close order drill. |
| 25 Aug 50: | Departed KANGNUNG by foot with 500 men. |
| 29 Aug 50: | Arrived WONJU (原州). Received NIPA uniform. |
| 29 Aug 50: | Departed WONJU after dark on foot. |
| 31 Aug 50: | Arrived YONGJU (榮州) via CHECH'ON (堤川). Departed on same night on foot. |
| 11 Sep 50: | Arrived UISONG (義城) via ANDONG with 500 men. Assigned to 8th Div, 3rd Regt, 2nd Bn, 1st Co, 1st Plt, 1st Sqd. Departed same night by toot with 1st Co. Arrived at point 12 km S of UISONG. Received M1891/30 rifle but no ammo. Departed same night. Arrived at small village (name unknown) 20 km S of UISONG. Rested two days and received two days or a total of eight hours military training in hills. |
| 15 Sep 50: | Departed this small village, 20 km S of UISONG on foot. After walking 6 km, arrived at a hill at POM Pak Dong (凡朴洞). Received 45 rounds. The 1st Sqd was put on security duty. |
| 16 Sep 50: | Rested during the day in fox holes. After dark the 1st and 2nd Sqds (20 men) of the 1st Plt, 1st Co were ordered to occupy a hill before the ROK forces. PW threw away his ammo and was the last of the 20 men to climb the hill but reached the top first by climbing straight up. He saw approx 50 ROK soldiers resting on the opposite side of the hill and ran toward them. PW said the ROK soldiers were quite surprised. PW warned them about the 20 NKPA troops who were armed with a LMG. PW was thanked by the ROK Army Bn CO for saving the 50 men from a surprise attack. |
Equipments:
The 1st Co was equipped with the following arms: M1891/30 rifle, 2 x PPsh M1941 SMG, 2 x PPsh M1943 SMG, 2 x DP LMG, 1 x MAXIM HMG M1910 and 20 x RG-42 offensive hand grenades.
Dispositions:
The 3rd Regt CP was located 2 km N of POMPAK DONG. Supply was brought to ANDONG (安東) by RR and stored in houses. The supplies were transported to UISONG by approx 15 trucks every night. No further information.
Communications:
Roads: Condition of major roads were very good.
RR: Utilized up to ANDONG.
Bridges: Most road bridges were destroyed. Trucks used by-passes around bridges. RR bridges were very lightly damaged and already had been repaired.
Telephone, telegraph, etc: Field telephones were used. Never observed radio sets.
Intentions:
The mission of the 8th Div was to capture YONGCH’ON (永川) by 20 Sep 50.
Morale and propaganda:
Morale of troops was very low due to lack of experienced personnel and also because they were being forced to fight. PW stated that most men were waiting for a chance to desert. No leaflets observed. PW was told by plt ldr that the NKPA had already occupied all KOREA except for the towns of TAEGU am PUSAN.
