2. ASSESSMENT:
Informant was cooperative and appeared to be intelligent and observant. Information obtained seems to be reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
21 Jam 50 - PW was inducted at HAEJU (海州) and assigned to the city Security Forces. As a private, PW received 4 months basic training.
20 May 50 - PW was promoted to Jr Sgt and made a squad leader. Taught basic training to new recruits.
19 Sep 50 - 5th Regt was newly activated in HAEJU. PW was assigned to the 3rd Bn of this unit as a squad leader.
21 Sep 50 - Commissioned a Jr Lt and assumed command of a plat in the 4th Co.
14 Oct 50 - PW was promoted to Sr Lt and assumed command of 4th Co. The 5th Regt departed HAEJU. Only 3rd Bn headed toward SARIWON.
18 Oct 50 - 3rd Bn arrived at SARIWON (沙里院) and was immediately enveloped by UN Forces. 3rd Bn surrendered to them without firing a shot.

Unit Organization and Strength:
Original Organization and Strength:
Independent 5th Inf Regt - 4,500 men (120 Officers & 4,380 soldiers)
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th Inf Bns - 900 men each.
3rd Bn had: Independent Security Plat - 20 men.
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, Cos - 170 men each.

Last Known Composition of Unit:
The 3rd Inf Bn was completely routed by the UN Forces. The other five (5) Bns were believed to have fled to PYONGYANG (平壞) on or about 18 Oct 50.

Equipment:
Independent 5th Inf Regt - 5 HMG’s and 10 LMGs.
No vehicles were assigned to this Regt. Weapons, ammo, and supplies were all carried by the foot soldiers. The above machine-guns were all obsolete and did not operate properly.

Morale & Propaganda:
The morale of the PW’s unit was low, because the men were forcibly conscripted into the army.
