Willing to give information but interrogator feels PW did not have much more to tell. For enlisted period; reliability fair, For commissioned period; reliability good.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
10 Feb 48: PW left HAMGYONG PUKTO (咸鏡北道) to report for duty at KAECH’ON (价川) to Hq, RR Guard platoon of about 30 EM. Platoon leader KIM Ch’ang Jun (金昌俊) (김창준), Jr Lt. Unit Co: KIM Ch’ang Ik (金昌益) (김창익), Sr Lt. Total strength of this unit was 120. Mission of unit guarding RR station, tunnels, bridges and tracks between KANGGYE (江界) (강계) and SUNCH’ON (順川) (순천).
30 Apr 48: PW was given basic training and training in RR regulations. Assigned to guard the 4 km long tunnel near mount KAEKOKAE (개끄개) NE and 4 hours ride on freight train from KAECH’ON.
Dec 48: PW was promoted to Sgt.
Jul 49: Promoted to Sr Sgt.
5 Jul 49: PW ordered to report to CHINNAMP’O (鎮南浦) and was assigned to NKA.
Jul 49: 956th Ind Regt (Shore patrol duty) was organized. CO was IM Ch’ol (任哲) (임철), Sr Col (總佐) but did not wear the right insignia for his position. This regt was composed of 1st Bn at CHINNAMP’O, 2nd Bn at SONGIM (松林), 3rd Bn at CHANGYON (長淵). 3rd Bn was regular NKA but PW did not know its history. This Bn changed to 1st Bn about Aug 49 as it was composed of more experienced troops and was close to the 38o parallel. 1st Bn was redesignated as the 3rd Bn.
30 Aug 49: Organization of Regt was completed. PW was deployed as shore patrol in HAEAN-Myon (海安面) (해안면) sector near HONGGA-Ri (洪街里) (홍가리). The shoreline was trenched completely 5 to 20 m distant from the waterline dependent on the terrain. (See sketch for trench). Troops were armed with rifles, carbine, LMGs and HMGs. 70 x rounds of ammunition.
30 May 50: Commissioned Jr Lt and became platoon leader.
30 Jun 50: 1st Bn ordered to advance to HAEJU (海州). 2nd and 3rd Bns remained.
30 Jul 50: Arrived 30 Jul at KUNSAN on foot moving only by night due to aerial attacks. PW dug two lines of trenches along the shoreline of the KUNSAN Peninsula in about a month. Bn was deployed here.
10 Aug 50: PW’s Bn was assigned as 1st Bn of a newly activated 239th Ind Brig. PW heard this Brig was composed of 5 Bns. Mission of the Brig was composed of 5 Bns. Mission of the Brig was shore patrol. Brig CO was IM Ch’ong Song (任青星) (임청성), a Maj Gen (少將). 1st Bn comdr was relieved at HAEJU by IM In Jae (任仁在) (임인재), Capt (總尉), newly promoted. Brig Hq was at KWANGJU (光州).
26 Sep 50: Bn lost contact with Brig Hq.
30 Sep 50: PW was about 0200 moved out of shoreline patrol and moved his troops to Bn Hq. Bn CO with two Cos had already left. Co CO issued orders for the southern Korean troops to go home and the N Korean if they want to fight to move to higher ground of UNJANGSAN (雲長山) mountains where some units were reforming to attack. PW with asst Co CO and 7 EM surrendered to local police Hq.
Morale:
PW heard of UN troops landing and was upset. Bn Hq only told of landing at INCH’ON. However, when the UN troops began showing and up 4 km from his area, officers as well as EM, were completely demoralized. PW decided to surrender.
4. GENERAL:PW was most afraid of air raids and strafing. Even one UN plane was enough to send him to cover.

TRENCHES IN HAE AN MYON SECTOR
The Air Raid Shelter are first covered with logs about 20 cm in dia., covered with gravel for approx 30-50 cm., crossed with logs, packed with sand and soil, then camouflaged. The thickness of the completed cover is from 1m - 1.50m.
