3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
28 Jul 50 - Conscripted at PYONGYANG (平壞) after graduating middle school. Sent to officers training school for 16 days, and commissioned a Jr Lt.
14 Aug 50 - Assigned to the 2nd Co, 3rd Bn of the 27 Brig as Plt ldr.
Organization and Strength:
Original Strength - 12,000 men.
The 27th Brig (635 Unit) is made up of 4, HMG Bn, one Eng Bn, one 120mm Arty Bn, one 76mm Bn, one 45mm Anti Tank Bn and one Inf Bn. In addition a Recon Co, communication and Supply Co is directly attached to Brig Hq. There are about 750 men to each Bn.
The HMG Bn is made up of the following 7 Co; one 82mm mortar Co (2 Mortar) 2-HMG Co (6HMG to a Co) one Eng Co (land mines) 2-Inf Co (12 LMG each) one 45mm AA Gun Co (2 - 45mm Guns). A Communication Plt and Supply Plt is directly attached to Bn.
Unit History:
The 27th Brig was newly organized on 13 Aug at KUMCHON. About 90% of the men were recruits (mostly farmers before induction). Co grade officers were all students or teachers and Field grade or higher are battle experienced men, most of whom were officers of the 6th Route Army. The Unit trained in the mountains for about one month at KUMCHON. The 27th Brig was sent ILSON west of the HAN River, where they dug defensive positions. On 1 Oct 50, they retreated above the 38th Parallel to KIMCHON where the 1st Bn, 2nd Bn, 4th Bn and the Arty Bn dug defensive positions.
On Oct 7 50, the 27th Brig encountered the UN Forces for the first time.

It is believed that the 248th Regt the 107 Unit and the Interior Defensive Unit were at KUMCHON during the 27th Brig’s stay there.

Foreign Elements:
PW observed 3 Russian officers wearing military uniform during Jul and Aug 5, at PYONGYANG while he was in training at the officers candidate school. They were giving instructions on the techniques of firing to the candidates.
On Sep 50, PW observed anther Russian officer at KUMCHON.
