AIR DIVISION HQS (Code No 855), P’YONGYANG
Obs: 5 Jul 50 - 16 Aug 50
The Air Division Hqs was located at the airfield which was located on the E edge of P’YONGYANG City. The Divisional Commander was Maj gen WON, Yong (원영). It was rumored that this officer graduated from Russian Air Corps Officers School.
The C/S was Capt KIM, Man Su (金萬洙).
There was also a Russian Air Corps Hq on the airfield. There were many Russian officers here, the ranking officer a Col. PW heard that at one time 20 Russians were killed by a bombing raid of UN planes. The Russian appeared to be of various branches of service as some wore infantry uniforms. PW believed that the Russian pilots flew C-47 liaison planes and fighter planes from RUSSIA to be used by the NK flyers.
The airfield was bombed almost every day during the period PW was stationed here. The Air Div Hq was moved to an underground office, lathes, milling machines, used in making small parts for aircraft, were buried underground in the vicinity of airfield. Bombs, ammunition, and oil were hidden in nearby mountains.
From about 1 Aug 50, airplane parts that could be salvaged machinery, signal equipment and other that could be used were being shipped to KIMP’O Airfield. When PW departed P’YONGYANG, about 2/3 of the equipment from this airfield was already shipped to KIMP’O Airfield.
The 645th Unit (a pursuit regiment) which was under the command of the Air Div in P’YONGYANG was stationed in YONP’O. Other units under the command of the Air Div in P’YONGYANG were stationed in P’YONGYANG, KIMP’O and SINMAK.
When PW left the airfield on 16 Aug 50, the field was practically useless. The concrete runway was damaged and dirt was packed into the holes in the runway. Planes were able to use the field only about once each week.

SIGNAL EQUIPMENT, P’YONGYANG
Observation 5 Jul 50 - 16 Aug 50.
PW worked in the Signal Equip Repair Shop located in the P’YONGYANG Airfield. He was in charge of this shop and 2 EM helped in the repair work.
Practically all the signal equipment used by the Air Div in the P’YONGYANG was Russian manufactured. There was a small amount of Japanese and US equipment but this was mainly used for training purposes. Instruction books came with the Russian equipment and they were translated into Korean.
Most of the equipment was in poor condition and much damaged by bombing raids.
PW believed that the equipment came from MOSCOW region as “MOSCOW” and “ZAVOD LENINGRAD” were written in Russian on the crates.
