Unit History:
The 27 Brig was newly organized 11 Aug 50 at KUMCHON. Most of the men were recruits except for some officers. 2nd Bn strength 700.

4. GENERAL:
Medical Information:
There were 2 medical officers and 3 enlisted medics in the 2nd Bn. The medical dispensary was usually located 2 - 3 km to the rear of Bn Hq. The Brig hospital was located about 18 km to the rear of the dispensary. The staff of the Brig Hosp consisted of a surgeon general, 4 medical officers, 3 nurses and 1 cultural officer.
The Bn dispensary received all patients and treated minor wounds. Major wounded and personnel needing further treatment sent to the Brig Hosp which never returned anyone to the front but sent them to Brig. All wounded were treated as soon as possible. The seriously wounded were sent back by ox cart and the rest walked.
The professional ability of the medical officers were very low due to the fact that most of them were young students who had not finished medical school. Due to lack of medical equipment most of the wounded could not be treated before sent to Brig Hosp.
Bn received orders from Brig to check all food and water before it was used, but due to lack of testing equipment this could not be done. The doctor ate the food first, then after half an hour it was given to the troops.
Informant states that all wounded were given tetanus shots before being sent to Brig Hosp.
There were no typhoid of typhus among the troops and the civilian population during 1950. Informant states that last year several hundred people died of Jap B encephalitis between Aug and Oct. Most people contracted this disease during Sep and it was caused by mosquitoes.
Treatment for Jap B was inoculation. Jap B was most common on PYONGYANG and SINUIJU. To precent the occurrence of Jap B encephalitis, all of the mosquito breeding areas were covered with dirt, and vicinity within 1 km cleaned of all rubbish and grass.
