PW was cooperative and appeared to be of average intelligence. PW’s military information was limited.
The information obtained seems to be fairly reliable.
(PW arrived in PYONGYANG on 25 Jul 50. He has no knowledge of PYONGYANG’s (平壞) Govt offices.)
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
25 Jul 50 PW was conscripted and immediately entered PYONGYANG Officers School. He received training for 20 days and was commissioned a Jr Lt.
18 Aug 50 - Arrived at NAMCHON (南川). PW was assigned to the 26th Brig (APO 8824), 3rd HMG Bn, as a platoon leader. The Brig underwent 3 days of basic training.
30 Aug 50 - 3rd HMG Bn only departed NAMCHON and arrived at NUCHON (漏川) to undergo two weeks combat training.
25 Sep 50 - Arrived at HACHON-GUN, HANAM-MYON (華川郡下南西) via NAMCHON. 3rd HMG Bn went to HACHON-GUN, SAPUK-MYON (華川郡泗北面) to set up defensive positions.
2 Oct 50 - Arrived at HACHON-Gun, and arrived at MOJIN (母津) River. The unit made the river-crossing and set up defensive positions on the opposite bank.
5 Oct 50 - The men fled in the face of superior ROK forces advancing toward the river. PW and 17 other men surrendered voluntarily.
Organization:
26th Inf Brig - 7,000 men consisted of Tank Bn, Eng Bn, Inf Bn, four HMG Bn’s (700 men each) and four Arty Bn’s (70 mm, 120 mm, 82 mm, 45 mm).
The 3rd HMG Bn consisted of an independent communication platoon: independent AA-Gun platoon; independent anti-tank plat; and a sniper platoon.
Equipment (3rd HMG Bn):
17 HMG’s, 1 mortar (82 mm), and 20 Sub MG’s. The 3rd HMG Bn did not possess trucks. Supplies and ammo were transported by oxen and wagons seized from farmers.
Unit History:
On or about 18 Aug 50 the 26th Brig was still increasing in strength. The activation date of the 26th Brig was unknown. It was not until 27 Aug 50 in NAMCHON (南川) that this unit realized a full strength of 7,000 men. Once assigned to the 26th Brig, soldiers did not receive any form of training.
Dispositions:
PW stated that there were no units, save his own, in or near their operational area between YONCHON (連川) and HWACHON (華川).

Morale and Propaganda:
The morale of the men in the 26th Brig was very low. Forcibly conscripted into the NK Army, the men did not willingly carry out their duties. The men knew that they, as untrained and inexperienced soldiers, would not stand a chance in combat with the enemy having an equal strength.
PW and his plat once (3 Oct 50) observed and read UN propaganda leaflets, which later (5 Oct 50) influenced the PW and his men to surrender voluntarily.

PW did not observe any RUSSIAN military officers or members of the Chinese Communist Forces in KOREA
