3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
28 Jul 50 - Conscripted at PYONGYANG and assigned to the Comm Co directly attached to 74th Regt as Jr Lt.
1 Aug 50 - Arrived at HAEJU and for one month serviced telephone lines from 74th Regt Hq to 43rd Div Hq.
15 Sep 50 - The 74th Regt arrived at HWAYONG MYON and established defensive positions. 43rd Div stayed at HAEJU.
10 Oct 50 - A Plat of the Comm Co was sent to MOKUTAN MYON with PW in charge.
15 Oct 50 - UN Forces arrived and PW and his Plat started retreating to SARIWON.
18 Oct 50 - Arrived at SARIWON and were captured.
Equipment: (74th Regt)
5 Telephones, 1 switchboard (30 plug Jap made), 50m of wire, 5 trucks, 82mm mortar, anti-tank gun, sub-machine gun and rifles. Only 50% of Regt was believed to be armed.
Unit History:
The 43rd Div was organized at HAEJU 18 Aug 50. Most of the officers EM were students or common laborers between the ages of 18 - 40.
The Div was overrun by UN Forces at HAEJU but PW believes that the Bn CO’s and up, retreated north by truck.
Personalities:
74th Regt CO - LI, Tu Hi, Col. Former 8th Route Army, spoke Russian very fluently.
Morale and Propaganda:
Morale of the unit was very low. After reading propaganda leaflets most of he men started deserting unit.
Foreign Element:
Observed 3 Russian Officers at PYONGYANG during Jul 50.
