4. GENERAL:
The 2nd Div included a Surgeon general and one medical Bn. Each Regt had one chief surgeon, 4 medical officers, 9 sanitation NCO’s and 30 EM as stretcher bearers. In the PW’s 4th Regt, one medical officer was not qualified as a doctor but had medical duties nevertheless.
The wounded from the various Bns were taken to the Regt hospital which was located about 5 km to the rear of the battlefront. The critically injured were taken care of at the Regt level and quickly sent to Div hospital. Minor wounds were cared for after the critically wounded were handled. If curable within a week patients were kept at the Regt hospital and sent to the battle front from there.
The Div hospital was located about 12 km rear of the battle front and the field hospital about 25 km.
Medical equipment and supplies were adequate here except that bandages were very scarce.
Although they had quite a bit of Russian made equipment and supplies, they used mostly American manufactured articles because Russian supplies were of very poor quality.
The troops received CHOLERA, TYPHOID, and TYPHUS shots twice a year. These shots are given just before the season of the various sicknesses as mentioned. The chief surgeon of the Regt keeps the record of the EM.
It is believed that dysentery was quite common among the N K troops.
There was several cases of malaria & Jap B encephalitis among the troops. No preventive shots were given for these diseases. After a patient contracts malaria he is given atabrine shots. Those that cannot be cured with atabrine are given Salpalsan which is believed to be very effective.
The sanitation officers were supposed to make checks of food supplies and water, but due to lack of equipment no checks were made. Some times the water was boiled and given to the troops but this could not be maintained so water was seldom checked.
