PW tried to be helpful but information was limited to his own unit.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
4 Apr 48 - Drafted into the NKA at NANAM (羅南) and assigned to 1st Sqd, 45mm AT Gun Plat, 2nd Bn, 5th Regt, 2nd Div. Served in the above unit until Sep 1948.
Oct 48 - Transferred to P’YONGYAN (平壞) and assigned to 1st Sqd, 2nd Plat, 2nd Co, 303 Ind Bn as a Sqd Ldr and a Plat Ldr.
15 Feb 50 - Transferred to P’YONGYANG and assigned to motorcycle training center as a mechanic. There were about 600 students in the center. Most of the students were also taught how to drive motorcycles.
5 May 50 - The motorcycle training center was redesignated as 603rd Ind Regt at P’YONGYANG. He was assigned to the motorcycle maintenance Co as Co CO.
28 Jun 50 - 603rd Ind Regt departed HAEJU (海州).
15 Aug 50 - All of the 603rd Ind Regt except PW’s Co arrived at CHINJU (晋州) and he joined the 603rd Ind Regt.
21 Sep 50 - PW’s Co arrived at CHINJU (晋州) and he joined the 603rd Ind Regt.
26 Sep 50 - The Regt started to retreat. Only 13 troops including the PW remained at CHINJU until 27 Sep 50.
29 Sep 50 - The 13 men withdrew and arrived TAEJON.
4 Oct 50 - Three men including the PW voluntarily surrendered to a local SK police station located 20 km N of CH’UNGJU (忠州).
Unit Organization and Strength:
603rd Ind Regt, which was activated at PY’ONGYANG on 5 May 50, was originally composed of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th Motorcycle Bns, 45mm AT Gun Bn, 120mm Mortar Bn and Armored Car Bn. In addition to the above Bn there was as signal Co, Eng Co, Transportation Co, Motorcycle maintenance Co, Medical Center, guard Plat and Finance Plat. Original strength of the Regt was approximately 3,000.
Equipment:
The 603rd Ind Regt was originally equipped with 600 motorcycles each mounted with a LMG.
150 jeeps, 50 trucks (GAZ-51), 6 trucks (ZIZ-151), 50 light armor car, 12 120 mm mortars, 16 82mm Mortar, 12 45mm AT Guns, 20 HMG’s, 1000SMGs.
PW stated that about 300 motorcycles, 100 jeeps and 30 trucks were left behind on the way from PY’ONGYANG to CHINJU because of lack of fuel.
