2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative and willingly offered to give all information of military value before he was even asked. Surrendered to ROK Forces with his platoon.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
15 Jul 50 - Inducted into the NKA at P’YONGYANG and received 1 month training at the Central No 1 OCS in P’YONGYANG.
12 Aug 50 - Commissioned Jr Lt.
14 Aug 50 - Arrived NAMCH’ONGJOM (南川店) and was attached to the 26th Brigade which was under process of activation.
20 Aug 50 - The Ind HMG Bn, 26th Brigade was activated in HAMP’O (汗浦) and PW was assigned to the training of an infantry platoon for 20 days.
20 Sep 50 - Completed training and were dispatched to PAEK HAK (白鶴), a village located 12 km N of the 38th parallel. The Ind HMG Bn CP was located in PAEK HAK and all the units of the battalion were deployed along the 38th parallel.
Assigned to the 1st Plat, 2nd Co, Ind HMG Bn, 26th Brigade, as platoon leader and was dispatched to an OP located on a mountain 12 km S of PAEK HAK along the 38th parallel.
23 Sep 50 - Promoted to rank of Lt.
5 Oct 50 - The Ind HMG Bn was ordered to proceed to HWANGJIRI (黃池里) and the 1st Plat, was ordered to act as a guard unit for the Ind HMG Bn CP. However, the PW led his platoon into the village of MAJON-Ni (馬田里) with the intention of deserting. He sent out 2 men to contact the UN Forces located across the 38th parallel with directions to obtain a cease fire order between 0400 and 0600 hours, 8 Oct 50, and permission for his platoon to surrender.
6 Oct 50 - Led his platoon to the village of TONGUI-Ri (東義里), which was located 6 km south of MAJON-Ni.
The 1st Plat was originally composed of 45 men but when PW announced his intentions of surrendering to the UN Forces, 9 men deserted to unit (6 men were members of the Labor Party). Another man, who was a member of the Labor Party became involved in a heated argument over the decision and was killed by the other members of the platoon.
About 1900 hours of the same day, 2 squads of the HMG Plat, who were ordered to join the PW’s platoon arrived in TONGI-Ri and the 10 men from the 2 squads joined PW’s platoon. The total number of men under PW’s command was now 45.
8 Sep 50 - PW had his platoon in readiness to cross the 38th parallel in accordance with his original plan between the hours of 0400 to 0600.
While attempting to cross the IMJIN (臨津) River, they were fired upon by the NKA. Artillery fire from across the river wounded one man slightly but the group managed to cross the river safely on boats. They arrived CHOCH’ON-Ni (啫村里) and immediately surrendered to the ROK Forces who were informed of their arrival by the 2 runners sent out on 5 Oct 50.

Unit Organization and Strength:
The 26th Brigade was composed of 4 rifle battalions, 2 HMG battalions, 2 Ind HMG battalions, 1 artillery battalion, 1 engineer Co, one signal Co, 1 reconnaissance Co, 1 supply Co and 1 Guard Plat.

Last Know Composition of Unit:
As of 25 Sep 50, PW heard that the 26th Brigade was minus 3 Rifle Bns because they were dispatched to KORANGP’O-Ri (高浪浦里) as reinforcements for another brigade.
The organization and strength of the Ind HMG Bn, 26th Brigade was not changed in combat (as of 25 Sep 50).

Equipment:
The T/E of the Ind HMG Bn, 26th Brigade was as follows:
2 x HMG Co’s - Each Co was composed of 3 HMG Plat. Each Plat was equipped with 4 HMGs, 4 SMGs, and 12 Carbines.
2 x Rifle Co’s - Each Co was composed of 3 rifle Plats and a HMG Plat. One Rifle platoon was armed with 4 x LMG’s, 4 x SMG’s and 37 rifles.
1 Engr Co - 8 x SMG’s and 47 rifles.
1 Supply Plat - 5 x SMG’s and 45 rifles.
1 Signal Plat - 7 x SMG’s, 13 rifles and 6 field telephones.
1 AA MG Plat - 4 x AA MG’s, 5 x SMG’s and 11 x Carbines.
1 AT Rifle Plat - 4 x AT rifles, 5 SMG’s and 11 Carbines.
1 Sniper Plat - 1 x SMG and 44 rifles with telescopic sights.
The Ind HMG Bn was fully armed with the necessary HMG’s in accordance with the T/E and 2,500 rounds of ammunition were distributed to each gun (as of 1 Oct 50). PW heard that the supply section was unable to distribute anymore ammunition for the SMGs and LMGs.

Unit History:
The 26th Brigade was activated in NAMCH’ONJOM during Aug 50, and all its officers were students who received 1 month training at OCS in P’YONGYANG.
The Code number was 634 and the PO was 8822.

Disposition:
As of 1 Oct 50, PW heard that the 26th Brigade CP was located in YONCH’ON and the Ind HMG Bn CP was located in HWANJIRI (黃池里)
Heard that the 578th Brigade was deployed in the general area between HAMHUNG (咸興) and YANGDOK (陽德). The 19th Rifle Div was deployed along the 38th parallel but it was withdrawn and is now deployed in the general area between P’YONGYANG and YANGDOK (陽德).
2 Guard Divisions were deployed around the capital city of P’YONGYANG. One rifle division was deployed along the coast of SINANJU (新安州) to guard against any amphibious landing.
Two other brigades were deployed on the 2 flanks of the 26th Brigade, but PW was unable to give their designations.

Personalities:
SIM, Chong T’aek (沈狜沢) Maj Gen (少將) CG, 26th Brigade. Heard that Gen SIM committed suicide at YONCH’ON.
KIM, Kang (金江) (김강) Sr Col (總佐) C/S, 26th Brigade Heard that he was trained in CHINA under KIM, Il Song (金日成) (김일성)
KIM, Kyong Hwa (김경화) Maj (少佐) CO, Ind HMG Bn, 26th Brigade. Heard that Maj KIM was also trained in CHINA.

Morale and Propaganda:
Believes that 20% of the troops were Leftist inclined but the balance were strongly opposed to the present form of NK Government and did not possess any will to fight. They were conscripted into the Army under intimidation and the PW believes that one third of the troops deserted their units when they were ordered into combat.
Observed a US propaganda leaflet once near the 38th parallel and he believes that it was very effective in lowering the morale of the troops and induced them to desert their units or surrender to the UN Forces.
