2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative and appeared to be fairly intelligent and observant.
PW was in PYONGYANG (平壞) for 3 yrs up to 20 Aug 50 but was not able to pinpoint government offices, due to their recent changes in location.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
20 Aug 50 - PW was conscripted in PYONGYANG. He received basic training for 10 days, then commissioned a 1st Lt (due to his skill as an abacus operator) and departed PYONGYANG.
5 Sep 50 - Arrived at KIMCHON (金川), where he was assigned to the 27th Brig, 4th Bn, as a rations officer. Observed numerous documents bearing the unit designation - “635 Unit” (27th Brig).
17 Sep 50 - Arrived at PAJU-GUN, TANHYON-MYON (炭縣面).
10 Oct 50 - Arrived at CHANGTAN (長端) and camped for two days.
12 Oct 50 - Arrived PUK-MYON (北面).
14 Oct 50 - Arrived in the vicinity (2km west) of KIMCHON and encountered the enemy. PW and several others surrendered voluntarily.

Unit Organization and Strength:
27th Brig was composed of nine (9) Bns, (1st HMG Bn, 2nd HMG Bn, 3rd HMG Bn, 4th HMG Bn, Inf Bn, Engr Bn, Mortar Bn, and two (2) other unidentified Bns). Directly under the 27th Regt were two (2) Ind Cos (Comm CO and Transp Co).
Each HMG Bn (strength 700) was composed to seven companies (1st and 2nd HMG Cos, 1st and 2nd Inf Cos, Mortar Co, Engr Co and one unk Co). Directly under each HMG Bn were three (3) Ind Plts (Anti-Tank Plt, Comm Plt and the Supply Plt).

The 27th Brig was short on weapons. Ammo was obtained only when Brig reached PAJU-GUN.

Unit History:
27th Brig was first activated in KUMCHON on 20 Aug 50. PW heard that by the end of Aug 50 strength was 500 officers and 4,500 men.

Communications:
Each Bn of the 27th Brig was equipped with five (5) field telephones. No switchboard was furnished, however.

Leaflets:
The soldiers were forced to turn over UN propaganda leaflets to the officers without reading them. Any offenders caught were severely punished. PW believed that the leaflets greatly influenced the man to desert the NK Army. Some officers, before turing the UN leaflets memorized their contents and discussed them with other trusted men.

Foreign Elements:
On 5 Sep 50, while PW was in KUMCHON, he observed three (3) Russian officers in the 27th Brig area. He stated that the officers were all majors and were acting in the capacity of military advisers to the unit.
No CCF was ever observed in KOREA by the PW.
