PW was cooperative, information limited due to short period of service but considered reliable.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
23 Jul 50 - Conscripted at KYONGSONG (鏡城).
25 Jul 50 - Arrived PYONGYANG, assigned to OCS, upon graduation, became a Jr. Lt.
16 Aug 50 - Arrived KUMCHON, assigned 27th Brig, 635 Unit.
17 Aug 50 - Arrived KAEJUNG (雞井), assigned to the 3rd Bn, 27th Brig (635 Unit) and gave training consisting of close order drill to the men in his Plt.
21 Sep 50 - Entire 635 Unit arrived ILSAN.
? Sep 50 - 27th Brig, arrived KUMCHON and took defensive positions. After eight days ordered to move.
7 Oct 50 - 3rd Bn, 27th Brig arrived KAIJUN (雞井). 3rd Bn went to a mountain (near 38 Parallel SONBAKSAN) approx 10 km S of KAIJUNG.
13 Oct 50 - 3rd Bn encountered UN Forces and retreated to KUMCHON arriving 14 Oct 50. Here they met ROK troops. Entire 3rd Bn surrendered.
Original Organization and Strength:
635 Unit was composed to four (4) HMG Bns and one (1) Ind Inf Bn.
Bns wore composed of four (4) Cos. PW believed the strength of the 3rd Bn was approx 770.
Last known Composition and Strength;
PW stated that approx 1/4 of the 3rd Bn remained.
Equipment:
3rd Bn - 64 HMG (Russian made), 4 Mortars (Russian made), 32 LMG (Russian made), 112 Auto Rifles (Russian made).
Communications:
PW stated that standard gauges RR line between KYONGSONG and PYONGYANG was in good condition, there were gentle curves and no stoop grades. Many tunnels were observed on the way.
Morale and Propaganda:
Morale of the unit very low due to lack of food and bad treatment. Many men have deserted. Majority have seen UN propaganda leaflets and desertion in the units is increasing.
Soviet Officers:
About 15 Sep 50, approx 70 Offices of the 27th Brig were ordered to assemble at a point approx 2km N of KAEJUNG to observe Plts of the 4th Bn demonstrate attack and defensive tactics. Here PW sad one Soviet Officer wearing epaulets with two stars and two stripes, who seemed to be criticizing and advising the 4th Bn CO concerning of the demonstration.
