FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 1208) 19 October 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative. Information is reliable as PW’s over all knowledge is verified by known facts. PW seems to be at ease and well balanced although physically fatigued.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
23 Jul 50: PW, being a commercial college student at P’YONGYANG KONEM UNSU KON HAKPU, was sent with 70 others to be the 1st Military Academy at P’YONGYANG. In about 18 days the following subjects were covered theoretically with occasional demonstrations: trenches construction, bridge building, road building, compass and direction finding, laying of ground mines, CP construction, parades and discipline. Hearsay: PW heard of 2nd Military Academy in P’YONGYANG but does not know the location.
14 Aug 50: On 10 Aug 50 a group of 150 marched, mostly by night, foraging in nearby villages and arrived NAMCH’ONJON (南川店). While waiting 3 days, PW was issued complete uniform.
19 Aug 50: On 19 Aug 50, the 26th Brigade was activated under Brigade commander LEE Chae Yun (李載允) (이개윤) rank, Maj Gen (少將). Brigade strength was between 4,500 and 5,000.
20 Aug 50: 2nd Hvy Weapons Bn, composed to the following units, was dispatched to HAMP’O (汗湳) 12 km SE of NAMCH’ON (南川):

1 x 45mm Co
1 x 76mm Co
1 x Engr Co
1 Signal detachment
1 Anti-tank detachment
1 AA Gun detachment

PW claims the strength was 575 although T/O called for about 700. The average age was about 34, due to the presence of a large number of older men (up to 42 or 43). Theoretical training was continued until 29 Sep 50 when unit was dispatched to HWANGJI-Ri (黃池里) intact.
29 Sep 50: The unit minus weapons and equipment marched by night via MAJON-Ni (馬田里).
5 Oct 50: Arrived HWANGJI-RI.
6-7 Oct 50: The unit was ordered to dig long zigag trenches 90 cm wide. 1.90 m deep turning every 6 to 8 m, and a dugout in the trenches for air raid shelter. Trenches were dug only at night. The deployment area was about 2 or 3 km from the 38o parallel depending on terrain.
7 Oct 50: The Bn was issued weapons as follows: 7.62mm sub-MGs, carbines, rifles, 7.62 HMGs, 82mm mortars and 120mm mortars and 76mm guns. The mission of the Bn was to keep the ROK army from advancing beyond the 38o parallel. The 1st, 3rd and 4th Hvy Bn was kept in reserve. The Brig CO was at NAMCH’ON (南川) then went to YONCH’ON (湹川) which was bombed out. Present whereabouts of Brig Co un unknown.
8 Oct 50: The 2nd Hvy Bn was attacked at early dawn and the battle was over by 0900. The troops fled and present location is unknown. The Bn was completely scattered. PW estimated about 150 killed. PW with 42 EM walked 1 km and surrendered to 1st Bn, 10th Regt, ROK. Hearsay: The Bn CO escaped to CHONGONG-Ni (全谷里).

Morale:
The unit was composed of farmers and of older men. Morale was very low. PW was constantly on the lookout for escape and surrender as he had been drafter against his will.

Remarks:
At the 1st Military Academy there were Russian officers of all branches of service, about the rank of Lt Col (中佐).
