3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
17 Mar 49 - Conscripted at HAMHUNG (咸興). Basic training consisted of close order drill.
1 May 49 - Arrived at YONGDOK (陽德). Assigned 1st CO, 1st Bn, 3159th Ind, RR Security Regt. Patrolled area of YONGDOK RR station.
5 Jul 50 - PW arrived at KYONGSONG (서울) 3159th Ind RR Security Regt Hq, and was commissioned a Jr Lt. Assigned to 1st Co, 8th Bn, of the 3159th Ind RR Security Regt, and patrolled the WAN’SIM-NI (往十里) RR Sta with this platoon.
28 Sep 50 - PW and 40 other men ordered to WONJU (原州). Before arriving at HONGCHON, 10 of the 40 men deserted and rest of the men encountered heavy fire by UN forces.
30 Sep 50 - PW and 30 men went into HONGCHON and surrendered voluntarily to UN forces.
Unit Organization and Strength:
The 3159 Ind Rr Security Regt was composed to 8 Bns, with four Cos in to each Bn. PW estimated the strength of the Regt was approx 4,000. There were approx 500 in the 8th Bn of the 3159 Regt. Men carried rifles and patrolled RR lines and stations.
Unit History:
On 2 Sep 50, four new Bns were added to the original four Bns of the 3159 Ind RR Security Regt at KYONGSONG. The four new Bns were organized with men from the Volunteer Corps of SEOUL.
Communications:
Communications between units was conducted by telephones, however due to air bombardment, lines were cut and communications was completely cut off.

Morale and Propaganda:
Morale of the men was very low, due to the lack of food and constant air attacks.
A US propaganda leaflet caused a the PW to decide to surrender.
