Unit Organization & Strength:
Original Organization & Strength:
40th Corps - 25,000 to 30,000 men (approximate)
1st, 2nd & 3rd Branch Unit - 6,000 men each. Each Branch unit contained 3 groups - 2,100 men each. Each group consisted of 7 Bns - 700 men each, Trans Unit; Sanitation Unit; and Arty Unit.

Equipment of 3rd Branch Unit (as of 19 Oct 50)
12 trucks (2½ ton); 40 pack mules; 81 mortars (60mm, Chinese make); 18 Mortars (81mm, US make); 12 guns (120mm, US make); 54 HMG (US make); 72 sub-MG’s (REISING 45 Cal)
All soldiers in the 3rd Branch Unit were armed with Japanese rifles. In addition to those included in the above list, there were a few weapons of various make, calibre, and vintage, which the men picked up along the way. PW could not identify these. There were very few Russian weapons, however.
PW stated that their original weapons (mostly Japanese and Chinese) were very inferior to those of US. Many of the US made weapons were captured from the Chinese Nationalist Army and brought over to KOREA.
No information on armored vehicles, save that PW saw some Russian tanks (unidentified) crossing Yalu River on 19 Oct 50.

Unit History:
PW heard that the 40th Corps was activated on Oct 49 in KWANTUNG (広東), CHINA with an unknown strength.

Communications:
3rd Branch Unit while advancing to PYONGYANG (平壤) from SINUIJU (新義州) on 20 Oct 50 utilized, only mountain trails situated alongside the main highway. Traveling was done only at night to prevent detection from the air. Since the 3rd Unit was divided into three groups on 21 Oct 50, PW knew that only his group (2,100 men) definitely used the above method of traveling.

Intentions:
Only the 3rd Branch Unit of the 40th Corps crossed the Manchurian border into KOREA on 19 Oct 50. The remaining two Branch units crossed the border soon after. There was a one day interval between each unit. The 3rd Branch unit was classified as the advanced fighting group, with the 2nd and 3rd Units coming in later as reinforcements. After the 3rd Branch Unit crossed the border and commenced their advance south, it was divided into three combat groups of 2,100 men each. The three groups marched separately toward PYONGYANG. PW’s group got as far as UNSAN (雲山), before being discovered by ROK Forces. The other two groups were believed to be on the flanks of PW’s group. The 3rd Branch Unit was dispersed before reaching PYONGYANG.
The intentions of remaining 1st and 2nd Branch Units, after they crossed the border, were unknown. PW did not see them during his march to UNSAN (雲山).

Knowledge of other Units:
The 43rd Corps, which came as far as ANTUNG (安東), MANCHURIA, with the 40th Corps on Sep 50, was believed to have crossed the border into KOREA. PW heard that the 43rd Corps was going to reinforce the 40th Corps at an undesignated place.

Personalities:
(Rank unknown) WAN, SHIN MIN (王心民), 3rd Branch Unit CO.
(Rank unknown) PAL, KUO LIN (白國人), Platoon Ldr of 3rd Branch Unit.
Note: None of the officers in the CCA wore rank insignia in CHINA, MANCHURIA, and KOREA. Officers were easily detected among the soldiers, because they all wore red stripes on the seams of their trousers and on the seams of their coat sleeves.

Morale & Propaganda:
PW’s morale was low because he was being made to fight another country’s war.
The Commander of the 40th Corps told the men that they must combat the US soldiers, now in KOREA, who are soon going to invade CHINA.

4. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW was sure that the 40th and 43rd Corps (total of 50,000 to 60,000 men) crossed the border into KOREA. Whether any other units were being prepared as reinforcements was unknown.
Everyone in the CCF wore NK Army uniforms without insignia of rank. These uniforms were issued in ANTUNG, MANCHURIA, on or about 19 Oct 50.
