The 5th Independent Regt was composed of the 1st (1500th Unit) 2nd, 3rd (2,500th Unit), 4th, and 5th (3,500th Unit) Battalions. 1 x Engineer Company, 1 x Guard Company, and 1 x Band platoon.
Each battalion was composed of 4 x Rifle Companies, 1 x HMG Company, 1 x Mortar Company, 1 x Guard Platoon, 1 x Engineer Platoon, 1 x Supply Platton, 1 x Signal Platoon, 1 x AT Rifle Platoon, and 1 x Medical Platoon.

6 x 82 mm Mortars supposed to have been issued, but unit never received them.

LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
2nd Bn, 5th Independent Regt was attached to 43rd Div at HAEJU, as of 12 Oct 50.
4th Bn, 5th Independent Regt was assigned to Chief of HWANG HAE DO, MINISTRY OF INTERNAL AFFAIRS, as of 12 Oct 50.
On 12 Oct 50, the 5th Independent Regt (less 2nd and 4th Battalions) was ordered to proceed from HAEJU (YC3813) to CHOLSAN (XE4303) to receive further training (Combat).
After departing HAEJU on 14 Oct 50 the unit marched toward PYONGYANG, but upon discovering that their route North was cut but UN Forces near YC3774, they decided to surrender. PW and 2,000 others surrendered to an unknown UN Unit near YC3774 on 172230 K Oct 50.
Hearsay: An unknown regiment is located at CHOLSAN (XE4303). Ministry of Internal Affairs Units were located as follows:
One regiment in each DO (道).
Two regiments in HAMGYONG NAM DO.
One brigade at PYONGYANG.

PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW was inducted on 15 Jul 50 at HAEJU (YC3813) into the HWANG HAE DO Security Bn. Commissioned as Jr Lt upon induction.
On 3 Oct 50, the HWANG HAE DO Security Bn was redesignated as HWANG HAE DO 5th Independent Regt.

ARMOR AND ARTILLERY:
During the nights of 14 and 15 Oct 50 near SINWON-NI (YC3932), approximately 30 x 76 mm Guns and 20 x 45 mm Guns were seen being taken toward PYONGYANG. All pieces were being drawn by trucks.
