PERSONNEL & UNIT HISTORY
Conscripted by the Chinese Nationalist Army at CHIAN FU, Central China, and deserted to return home in Feb 48, at PONGCHUN, MANCHURIA.
In Oct 49, the PW was taken prisoner by the CCF, indoctrinated with communist ideals, then conscripted in Feb 50.
PW received 4 months training as a mortar crew member with the 40th Peoples Army, 3rd Branch Unit. The unit departed the KWANTUNG Province on 25 Jul 50, by foot and arrived at TANGSHAN, MANCHURIA. From TANGSHAN the unit travelled by train to ANTUNG.
On 15 Oct 50, the 40th Peoples Army crossed the YALU River at 2400 hours, utilizing a hastily constructed wooden bridge into SINUIJU. From SINUIJU, the 40th Army marched to the vicinity of UNSAN, using mountain trails alongside the highwasy extending to PYONGYANG. THE 40th Army dug fox holes and artillery gun positions at each stop en-route to UNSAN.
On 24 Oct 50, the PW’s unit’s movement was discovered by ROK FOrces and attacked. The unit dispersed and PW was captured on 25 Oct 50.

Duty: Platoon Leader
Orgn: 40th Army, 3rd Branch Unit, 60 Regt, 1st Bn, Transportation Co, 1st Platoon.

FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
The troops had two meals a day. Food consisted of rice, millet and flour transported by trucks from SINUIJU at night.

MORALE:
Troop morale was very low because of the lack of weapons and clothing, and air attacks.

CCF TROOPS IN KOREA:
A total of between 50,000 to 60,000 CCF troops are in North KOREA or are enroute. PW’s unit was straffed and bombed at ANTUNG 15 Oct 50, but no damage inflicted.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION:
1. CCF troops use no rank insignia.
2. The 40th CCF Army dug fox holes, trenches, and gun emplacements at every stop along their route of march from SINUIJU to the vicinity of UNSAN. The fox holes, trenches, and gun emplacements were usually dug on high ground overlooking the main highway between PYONGYANG and SINUIJU.
3. Only the 3rd Branch Headquarters and higher headquarters were equipped with radios. (PW did not see the radio equipment). Field telephones were battery-powered and of US, Japanese, and Russian origin.
4. The 3rd Branch Unit was equipped with about 27 x 2½ ton trucks, a few jeeps, and a little more than 100 horses. Unit did not have motorcycles or armored vehicles.
5. “Branch Unit” is the equivalent of a Brigade or under-strength Division.
6. On 15 Oct 50, 20 x T-34/85 tanks fo the CCF Army, manned by Korean CCF troops, were observed crossing the YALU River into SINUIJU from ANTUNG. (Destination Unknown).
7. PW had been issued one cotton quilted uniform and 1 x light cotton quilted comforter. Comforters were carried by the troops into battle but were inadequate to the cold.
8. Food and ammo was transported to the unit under cover of darkness by trucks from ANTUNG via SINUIJU.
9. The troops, although having low morale, are willing to fight because they have been told that when US Forces crossed the 38th parallel, it was the sign of US intentions to invade CHINA. Most of the troops have no feeling about communism, that is, they fight without conviction. The individual is satisfied if his needs are adequately met.
10. UN propaganda leaflets with pictures displaying the type of treatment PW’s are receiving, and graphs illustrating how much food, etc, PW’s receive daily, should be effective in influencing soldiers to surrender. Because a large percentage of the troops are not well educated, this type of propaganda will have the best effect.
11. No Russian advisors seen with unit.
12. The Korean people do not know of the presence of the CCF because all movements were accomplished in secrecy under cover of darkness.
13. When the 40th Army crossed the YALU River into KOREA, they changed into NK Uniforms at ANTUNG. The purpose was to maintain secrecy of the movement into KOREA. All troops wore NK uniforms.
14. The 40th Army (CCF) marched to the vicinity of UNSAN by way of mountain trails, bordering the highway extending from SINUIJU to PYONGYANG.
