3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
31 Jul 50: PW was drafted and sent to PYONGYANG Officers Training School.
13 Aug 50: Graduated and was assigned to 635 unit at KUMCHON.
17 Sep 50: PW moved with 635 unit to KUM CHONG (金村) and fortified the vicinity.
25 Sep 50: PW deserted his unit and hid in PONAMG Li.
Original Organization and Strength:
The 635 Unit (27th Regt) was comprised of 5 Bns (1 Inf Bn & 4 HMG Bns. Seven Cos made up one Bn. There were approx 750 men in a Bn.
Equipment (3rd HMG Bn) as of 17 Sep 50 consisted of 18 HMG’s.
Unit History:
1 Sep 50: The 635 unit (27th Regt) was fully activated with 5 Bns at KUMCHON.
Personalities:
3rd HMG Bn CO - TSU, Tong Paek, Capt. Former soldier of the Manchuria 8th Route Army, attended Pyongyang OTS.
Chief of Staff of 3rd HMG Bn, CHONG, Jae Ho, Sr Lt. Formerly from Manchurian 8th Route Army.
Morale & Propaganda:
Morale of unit was low because losing the war was inevitable without proper weapons, and without well trained men. Propaganda leaflet not seen.
4. GENERAL INFORMATION:Foreign Elements:
10 Aug 50: PW saw two Russian Officers with dark green field uniforms at KUMCHON. They were advising the Ind Inf Bn CO on methods suitable for use in combat training. They stayed there for one day. PW states one was a Maj and other a Lt Col.
