PW NAME: LEE, WON MO (李元模) (이원모)
RANK: Pvt (戰士)
ORGANIZATION: 11th Air Div, 56th Fighter Group (Code #887), 1st Squadron, Maintenance Squad.
DUTIES: Fighter Plane Maintenance Man
EDUCATION: Primary School (6 Years)
AGE: 22
OCCUPATION: Railroad Brakeman
ADDRESS: PYONGAN NAMDO, ANJU GUN, SINANJU MYON, WONHUNG-RI, #107 (平安南道安州郡新安州面元興里)
DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 191100 K Oct 50 at SINPYONG (CU 0406) by ROK 5th Regiment.
INTERROGATOR: C.H.S.


ASSESSMENT:
PW was separated from his unit on 24 Sep 50 at TAEJON.
PW was cooperative; information seems reliable.

T/O & E AND STRENGTH:
11th Air Division (the only one in NKA) was composed of one (1) fighter group & one (1) bomber Group.
Fighter Group, composed of three (3) fighter squadrons.
Fighter Squadron, composed of three (3) figher flights.

1st Fighter Flight (4 Pilots) equipment consisted of:
YAK B4
HMG 12.7 mm2 (150 rds per)
Cannon 20mm or 23mm1 (1150 rds per)


1st Fighter Squadron Personnel:
Officers (pilots)16

PW stated that radio, propeller, weapon and other technical functions were perfomred by M/Sgts who attended Air Corps School at WONSAN.

Planes of the 1st Fighter Squadron included:
YAK B12
Training YAK 112
Training YAK M3


56th Fighter Gruop
According to PW, original number of pilots was 40, ground officers and EM unk, equipment unk.
Maintenance Squad of 11th Air Division composed of 22 EM, no weapons.

LOCATION & ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
PW stated that he last saw 8 fighter planes at KIMPO Airfield on 2 Aug 50 which were destroyed by UN aircraft. PW did not know if the 11th Air Division was still in existence.
Airfields located at PYONGYANG, HAMHUNG, SINMAK and PYONGAN, but heard that those fields were all taken by UN Forces.
11th Air Division and 56th Fighter Group Headquarter were located at PYONGYANG as of 24 Jun 50.
PW heard that Bomber Group Headquarters and Air Corps Technician School were located at WONSAN.
On or about 1 Aug 50, PW saw 2 fighter planes and 2 bombers (IL-10 Attack Bomber) at SINMAK Airfield.
PW stated that there is no airplane builders or parts plants in North Korea. At present PW does not know what happened to the North Korean airplanes.

PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted into the Air Force, on 13 Mar 50 at PYONGYANG after trying to evade the Security Guard for 4 months. Received close order drill for one month.
On 24 Jun 50, 6 men from 1st Flight, 4 men from 2nd Flight, 2 men from 3rd Flight, 13 NCO’s and 25 ground officers came to SINMAK Airfield. ALL EM were maintenance men who performed guard duty.
On 9 Aug 50, 6 maintenance soldiers, 8 NCO’s and 22 ground officers (these men were from 1st, 2nd and 3rd Flight) went to KUNSAN (South Korea). PW did not see any planes here.

REPLACEMENTS:
Never saw additional pilots & airplanes other than T/O & E.

FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
Food was ample. PW did not know the source of Food and Ammo Supplies. On d/u Jun 50 PW heard that 4,000 planes were to come from Outer MONGOLIA; this rumor never confirmed. PW did not hear of nor see any planes from Communist China or Russia since he joined the Air Force.

MORALE:
Morale of his unit was low because they did not see any North Korean planes. They further know they were going to lose this war.

US PW’S AND UN PW CAMPS:
PW saw approximately 300 US PW’s at SINMAK on d/u Jul 50. He heard that they were going to PYONGYANG.

MISCELLANEOUS:
PW did not see any except Korean pilots.
PW believes all pilots were trained at North Korea.
