3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
26 Mar 50 - Volunteered at HASONG -MYON, assigned to 4th Field Training Bn as a cultural Officer (Sr Lt). All conscripted men of the province were sent to this point. Men were trained here for approx 40 days with wooden rifles. Training consisted of close order drill. After break of war the training was cut down to average of 4 days.
24 Sep 50 - The 4th Field Training Bn departed HASONG MYON due to heavy bombing and went to SINCHON.
13 Oct 50: PW was told later that the UN Forces were near SINCHON and the Young People’s Communist Committee were burning the buildings before UN Forces arrived.
14 Oct 50: Bn CO, Chief of Staff and PW, surrendered at PUK YUL MYON to ROK Young People’s Committee.

Unit Organization and Strength:
Original Organization and Strength:
The field training units were organized as follows:
A National Defense Central Hqs, located in PYONGYANG. Provincial Hq located in each “DO” of NK under Central Hqs, and “GUN” Field Training Bns located in every “Gun” and attached to “DO” Hqs.
There were four field training Bns in HWANG HEDO. The 4th Field Training Bn was composed of 13 Inf Cos. PW estimated that the total strength was approx 1,800.
There were approx 85 officers in this Bn.

Actual battle organization and Strength:
Before the outbreak of war an average of 3,000 men were trained on a 40 day cycle. After the war began an average of 1,800 men were trained in a 4 to 5 day training cycle.

Equipment: (4th Field Training Bn)
Men were trained with wooden rifles. There were approx ten rifles (Jap made) in the Bn.

Unit Duties:
The duty of the 4th Field Training Bn was to train men (ages from 17 to 42). The men were trained and shipped to various military units. The men were brought to the training area by the Military Mobilization Section of the “GUN”. All the men being trained were still in civilian clothes.
PW stated that he and other officers of the training center were not in the service, but in the Young People’s Communist Party. They were given military ranks, but were dressed in civilian clothes.
PW was a Cultural Officer. He gave lectures to the men on military courtesy and loyalty to their country. PW’s main duty was to keep up the morale of the men.

Unit History:
PW stated that the Field Training Bns were organized about Apr 49.

Communications:
Bicycles were used for Communication between the “DO” Hqs and the training Bn.

The above mentioned officers were not military officers. PW stated that they were volunteers from the Young People’s Communist Party and retained their identity as such.

Morale:
Morale of the men was low because they were forced into service. A large number of men deserted the Bn during training.

4. GENERAL:
After the surrender of JAPAN, The Communist Party of TEPYONG RI forced PW to sign a paper. Later he was told that he was in the Communist Party and must do everything he was ordered to do. PW refused and was put in the ocal prison for approx one week.
On 4 Jan 48, PW was ordered to attend a Communist School at HUNGNAM. He attended the school unit 15 Jun 48. The school term was for 3 months, but since PW did no pass his examinations he was expelled on 15 Jan 48.
The subjects taught at the school were history of Soviet Communism, Russian language (reading, writing, and conversation), and othe subejcts. All young people, 20yrs of age were permitted to attend this school. Those who graduated were eligible to hold high positions in the Communists.
On 24 Jul 48, PW was called upon the be the Treasurer for the local Young People’s Communist Party Cell, dues of 5 Won per month were paid by members. The Young People’s Communist Party assembled twice a month. Meetings were held whenever necessary. Frequently a representative from the “DO” arrived and gave speeches on new agricultural progress as well as communist propaganda.
Men and women from the ages of 16 to 30 were admitted into the Young People’s Communist Party.
On Dec 48, PW was appointed secretary of the local party. In Mar 49, when appointed “GUN” Young People’s Communist Party Leader, he had to move to KAPSON-GUN where the “GUN” Young People’s Communist Party Hqs was located. There were three other “GUN” ldrs other than the PW. PW and other three ldrs were called the organization ldrs, their duties were to receive orders from higher officials and see that these orders were sent to each MYON in the “GUN”.
The “GUN” Young People’s Hqs was composed of:
