4. GENERAL:
War Atrocity Committed by PW:
On 27 Sep 50 in KONGJU (公州) the local police force took 30 political prisoners into the nearby hills. A Sr Lt (unidentified) of the 603 unit picked out three (PW included) soldiers and four police officers to carry out the execution of the prisoners. The prisoners were formed in a single-file, semi-circle and faced the executioners. The soldiers were armed with sub-machine guns, while the police officers possessed rifles. At the Sr Lt’s command, the mass execution began. PW did not stay to find out what became of the bodies.
Of the 30 political prisoners shot, 3 survived and later identified the PW as being one of the executioners. Only two, including the PW, were identified. The others managed to escape before the arrival of ROK Forces on 28 Sep 50.
Further details are unknown.
Records are being forwarded to JAG, 8th Army from JAG, 2nd Div. PW is currently being held in Inchon POW Compound.
