ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 1881　16 October 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 1134)　12 October 1950

PW was very intelligent, sincere and cooperative. No attempts were made at evasion and answers were given without hesitation to the best of his knowledge. PW feels that the NKA is fighting for a lost cause, so surrendered voluntarily.

1 Aug 48 - PW was inducted into the army at HAMHUNG, and assigned to the Ind Inf Brigade. Received 9 months of infantry training.

May 49 - PW was transferred into the 105th Armored Brigade at P'YONGYANG. Received training as a tank gunner up to 18 Jun 50. Training consisted of lectures in methods of firing the gun, the different uses of shells as to targets, and lectures on Communism from the political officer. Shape of tank was drawn on the ground and crew members were taught their positions. PW was assigned to the let Armored Regt.

Mar 50 - The 1st Armored Regt received their first allotment of tanks.

Jun 50 - PW was promoted to Sr Sgt.

The 105th Armored Brigade was re-designated to the 105th Armored Div in SEOUL.

1 Sep 50 - PW's Div was stationed in KUMCH’ON.

15 Sep 50 - The 1st Armored Regt, 303rd Ind Recon Bn, was ordered to SUWON. The 2nd and 3rd Armored Regt, to TAEJON, where Div Hqs was to be located. PW's tank was then under heavy aircraft attack and was damaged. PW was told to stay with his tank until it was repaired, then head for SUWON.

22 Sep 50 - PW and 11 other members of the repair crew gave up the repair job because of UN Forces nearing KUMCH'ON and departed on foot for YONGDONG and TAEJON, arriving 24 Sep 50.

25 Sep 50 - PW alone headed for CH'UNGJU and surrendered at HA DAM-Ni (荷潭里), 2 Oct 50.

1st Armored Regt - 54 T-34/85 tanks, 10 x 45-mm AT Gun

2nd Armored Regt - 41 T-34/85 tanks

NCO Trng Regt - 20 T-34/85 tanks

65th Mtz Inf Regt - 30 GAZ-51 trucks, 15 x 76-mm M1942 AT Gun, 30 x 45-mm M1942 AT Guns

83rd Mtz Inf Regt - 50 GAZ 51 trucks, 100 GAZ-67 Soviet jeeps, 800 Soviet M72 motorcycles, with mounted MG, 50 BA-64 Armored Cars, 5 x 76-mm M1942 AT Guns, 30 x 45-mm M1942 AT Guns.

308th Ind Armored Bn - 30 x SU-76 SP Guns

303rd Recon Bn - 200 Soviet M72 motorcycle's mounted with MG, 8 BA-64 Armored Cars, 5 x 45-mm M1942 AT Guns

Independent Trans Co - 15 GAZ-51 trucks.

Infantry transportation: 65th and 83rd Mtz Inf Regt’s personnel travelled either in trucks or jeeps.

The fuel situation was very critical. Light and heavy diesel oil for tanks were very difficult to procure.

YU, Kyong Su (유경수) Maj Gen, 40, CG 105th Armored Div.

Served in Chinese Communist Army. Height, approx 5'5", Wt, 140 lbs. Married with 2 children. Lives in P'YONGYANG. Strong Communist and a close friend of KIM, Il Song, Also a member of the Communist Labor Party.

CH'OE, U Sik (최우식) Col (大佐), 35, CO 1st Armored Regt.

Graduate of P’YONGYANG Military Academy. Member of Communist Labor Party. Ht, 5'8", Wt, approx 140 lbs.

1948 - The 15th Armored Regt was organized in. P’YONGYANG.

May 49 - The 15th Armored Regt T/O & E was changed to the 105th Armored Brigade while still in P’YONGYANG.

Jun 50 - The 105th Armored Brigade was reorganized and redesignated to the 105th Armored Div in SEOUL.

The 105th Armored Div was considered as one of the most famous Div's within the NKA.

Rifle Div Commanders were always trying to get elements of the 105th to support them in ground action. The name 105th itself had a decided moral affect upon the troops.

Unit commanders from Co on up to Regt personally lead their men and were usually found in the thick of the battle.
