3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
1 Jan 47 - Joined the South Korean Navy at MUKHO (墨湖). Basic training received at CHINHAE (鎭海).
o/a 17 Feb 47 - Arrived MUKHO. PW assigned to the MUKO Naval General headquarters Guard Co. Duties were guarding American Naval Advisors and other high officials quartered in SAMCHOK Area for 10 months.
Dec 47 - PW and 3 men assigned to guard lighthouse in CHUMUN-JIN (注文津) Har bor, for 5 months.
7 May 48 - PW and 3 men reassigned and ordered to return to MUKO. Boarded tugboat the TONG CH’ON HO (通川號) at CHUMUNJIN harbor. There were 26 other men on board same ship. About 1,000 meters out of the harbor, 3 shots were fired on deck, then 2 men aremed with Japanese 99 Rifles, came to the crows quarters and told the men to remain where they were.
1800 7 May 48 - Ship arrived in SOKCH’O (束草) Harbor about 16 km N of the 38˚ Parallel. 24 men, 2 dead officers, and 4 mutineers disembarked from ship. Escorted to WONSAN (元山) by 10 North Korean Policemen. 4 mutineers departed for P’YONGYANG.
27 Jun 48 - Arrived HOERYANG, Received basic training for 7 days.
9 Jul 48 - Arrived MANP’OJIN. Forced to enter the NK Security Forces. Received 6 months training. After completion of training, assigned as guards on the Manchrian-Korean border. PW performed this duty for 1½ years. After 6 months of regular duty as guard,
some were promoted to Sgts and some to Lts.
20 Jun 50 - The NK Security Forces of 160 men, including the 24 former Navy personnel, departed MANP’OJIN by rail.
27 Jun 50 - Arrived WONSAN. Joined forces with 450 WONSAN Security Forces and formed the 1st Regt, NK Security Forces. Strength 612 men.
15 Jul 50 - 1st Regt departed WONSAN by rail.
20 Jul 50 - Arrived CHUNCHON (春川). Immediately went on Security Guard duty and recruited South Korean men for the “Volunteer Corps”. In 7 days they recruited 250 men from CHUNCH’ON, and assigned them to the Security Force, 101st Regt. Strength of 101st Regt, Secuirty Force was 862 men. PW was assigned to 7th Bn 1st Co 1st Plt.
25 Jul 50 - PW promoted from Sgt to Jr Lt.
27 Jul 50 - NK Police took over Security duties in CH’UNCHON.
29 Jul 50 - 101st Regt Security Force departed CH’UNCH’ON, on foot.
o/a 15 Aug 50 - Arrived SANG OKTONG (上玉洞).
17 Aug 50 - 7th BN departed SANG OKTONG (上玉洞).
o/a 5 Sep 50 - Arrived YONGDOK (盈德) and went on security guard duty from YONGDOK to P’YONGHAE-Ri in the mountain range. Lookout objects were naval vessels. Everytime naval craft were spotted size, number of vessels, time of observation and location had to be reported to Bn Hqs.
25 Sep 50 - Arrived KANGGU (강구). Met a Plt of the 12th Regt, 5th Div. 7th Bn accompanied this platoon into the mountain to set up defenses. After being in mountain area for 3 hours, the men realized that ROK troops had surrounded them. They were shelled by mortars from all sides for 4 hours. PW escorted remainder of 1st Co, 7th Bn (20 men) out of the mountains and surrendered to ROK troops 25 1730 Sep 50 at KANGGU.
