2. ASSESSMENT:
PW seemed intelligent and was cooperative. Since no basic training was received and he had no knowledge of military fuctions, information was limited. PW is very grateful for the humane treatment received during his confinement in TAEGU and at the PW Compound in PUSAN. Wishes to thank the UN for the fine treatment received.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
23 Aug 50 - Conscripted into NKA in P’YONGYANG as a Jr Lt because he was an honest and faithful worker for 3 years in an Iron Foundry. (From Feb 47 to Aug 50). PW did not receive basic training.
23 Aug 50 - 14 men including PW, departed P’YONGYANG as replacements for the 10th Div. There were 6 Lt’s, 4 Jr Lt’s, and 4 Sgt’s.
O/a 17 Sep 50 - 14 men arrived KORYONG (高寜). 5 men including PW, were assigned to various units in 25th Regt, 10th Div. The other 9 men were assigned to 9th Div, which was in TUKSONG-Dong (得成洞).
Strength of 25th Regt as of 17 Sep 50, 350 men. Received 1,000 replacements conscripted in KORYONG (高寜) Area. Boosted strength to 1,350 men. 1st Bn, 25th Regt, 10th Div received 200 new replacements and boosted its strength to 350 men.
19 Sep 50 - Elements of the 25th Regt, 10th Div were alerted for defense in KORYONG (高寜).
31 Sep 50 - the US troops broke through the perimeter. Losses amounted to about 400 men.
O/a 3 Oct 50 - Unit retreated towards SANGJU (尙州). US troops had already occupied SANGJU so they went to UMI-Myon (우미面).
4 Oct 50 - Engaged the ROK troops in UMI-Myon for 2 hours, PW hid in the mountain.
5 Oct 50 - Surrendered to US Forces 5 1100 K OCt 50.

PW was supply platton leader, 1st Bn - 14 men.

These supplies were issued to the 1st Bn from 10th Div Hqs located 8 km N of KORYONG o/a 17 Sep 50.

4. GENERAL:
During the month of Aug 50, while PW was still a civilian. there were very few NKA troops in P’YONGYANG. However he does know that there was an AA Unit of Bn or Co strength located at the TAE DONG (大同江) River Dam in P’YONGYANG. Also AA gun emplacement on large buildings in P’YONGYANG.
Living Conditions in North KOREA as of Aug 50: Living condition in North KOREA were bad because of the rise in the cost of living, due to hoarding by merchants, and supply routes being disrupted by constant bombing. Price of rice was originally 300 Won a MAL (4 3/4 gallons) (小斗一斗). Price as of Aug 50 - 500 WON a MAL. Average earning of North Korean laborer was 500-700 WON monthly.
Most of rice supply was sent to the front. (These factors are lowering the morale of the North Korean people).

5. STRATEGIC INFORMATION:
Iron Smelting Plant:
Location: 1 km E of CHINNAMP’O (鎭南浦) main RR Station, in CHINNAMP’O Harbor.
This factory received ore from the HOLTONG (홀동) Mines in SAKJU (朔州) Mts. Average 12 carloads of ore are extracted every 15 days. Transported by rail to Iron Plant. Processed ore is smelted into bullion and sent to RUSSIA for further processing into gold, copper and lead. KOREA has no machinery to extract gold, copper and lead from the bullion. Size of each bullion 16 x 10 x 5 inches. Weight of each bullion, approx 150 lbs. Average of 108 tons of bullion are shipped to RUSSIA every 15 days. Ore bullion has been exported to RUSSIA since 46.
Tin is also processed and sent to RUSSIA in bullion, at the rate of 240 bullion a month.
All bullion sent to RUSSIA from this factory has Russian markings. “Earmarked MOSCOW #3 USSR.”

Nickname “Bulldog” because his face is fat and resembles a bulldog. Lives with Chief of Factory. The Russian “Bulldog” as he is called by all factory workers, arrived from RUSSIA as Advisor in Iron Factory in 46. Speaks a little Korean.
