2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was of higher than average intelligence, observant and had a good memory. Very cooperative during interrogation and his reliability was good. PW was a highly trained medical man. He surrendered to ROK.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
27 Jul 48 - PW volunteered for NKA in UIJU (義州) and assigned to SECURITY FORCE, P'YONGAN PUKTO Bn (平安北道 大隊), 3rd Co. Transferred to medical section and given 8 months training.
1. Autopsy in People's Hospital in UIJU
2. Dietetics
3, Pharmacy
4. Analysis
5. Sanitation
6. First Aid.

30 May 49 - PW was promoted to Sr Sgt and transferred to Medical Plat, 4th Bn, 3rd Brig in HAEJU (海州). Performed the following duties:
1. Gave treatment to injured
2. Disinfected barracks and various buildings
3. Examined vegetables
4. Tested drinking water.

25 Jun 50 - The 3rd Brigade engaged ROK units at ONGJIN (甕津). The total strength at that time was 8000, Fought for approximately 7 hrs before capturing the city of ONGJIN. The unit received the following casualties: 100 wounded - 50 killed. The entire unit remained there until 30 Jun 50.
6 Jul 50 - Arrived in SEOUL and started to reorganize the unit. 9 Jul 50 the 3rd Brigade was redesignated 9th Div with a strength of 10,000 men, PW was assigned to MEDICAL SECTION, 2nd Regt of 9th Div.
10 Aug 50 - Advanced through TAEJON (大田), KOCH’ANG (居昌) and arrived in SINBAN-Ni (新反里). Enroute the 1st and 2nd Regts of 9th Div were strafed and rocketed by UN aircraft and suffered 70 wounded and 30 killed. The 1st and 2nd Regts totalled 8000.
21 Aug 50 - Arrived in SINBAN-NI (新反里). For 15. days he unit made preparation for an offensive. On 23 Aug 50, 3 truck loads of ammunition arrived from SEOUL. 2 trucks were lost due to air action enroute.
24 Aug 50 - 3 trucks loaded with food and supplies arrived.

The total strength of 1st and 2nd Regt of 9th Div was approximately 7800 men.
5 Sep 50 - o/a 2000 hrs the unit advanced to the NAKTONG River (洛東江).
6 Sep 50 - On 2100 hrs the 1st and 2nd Regt of 0th Div started to cross the river. The 9th Div advanced approximately 28 km E of NAKTONG River.
9 Sep 50 - The opposition became heavier and 9th Div was forced to retreat 20 km towards the NAKTONG River. During the crossing and 3 days combat the 2nd Regt lost 2500 killed and 400 wounded. Total strength as of 10 Sep 50 for 2nd Regt was 1000 men. The entire unit bivouacked until 19 Sep 50.
19 Sep 50 - 9th Div was ordered to retreat to KUMCH'ON (金泉) and 4th Div was to replace it. All infantrymen departed for KUMCH'ON a day before the Medical Unit.
24 Sep 50 - Medical Unit arrived in IWON (仁院), met the Executive Officer of 2nd Regt and was ordered to withdraw as far as TAEJON (大田). Unit was unable to enter TEAJON because the UN troops had occupied it. They took the western route and arrived in YOSONG (輸城) 8 km NW of TAEJON with 35 men.
28 Sep 50 - PW and his superior officer, LEE, Tok Chae prepared a meal for 35 men. PW and his assistant slept for 2 hrs, awoke and discovered that everyone had left. Decided to escape to CH'ONGJU (淸州) but was informed by the townspeople of YUSONG that it was occupied by the UN troops. Decided to escape to their home in NK, CHONGJU-DON (正州洞). Enroute PW was captured by ROK troops.

Personalities:
9th Div CG CH’OE HYON (崔鉉) (최현) Rank, Maj Gen (少將) Age 56 - Served in Chinese 8th Route Army until 1945. Speaks Chinese fluently.
2nd Regt CO - CHONG, San Gyu (鄭産규) (정산규), Lt Col Age 28 - Born in SINUIJU. Came from poor family. Worked his way up from the bottom to present position.
Medical Unit CO - LEE, Tok Chae (李德在) (이덕재) Sr Lt Age 22 - Born in HAMHUNG (咸興) Graduated from HAMHUNG MED COLLEGE in Apr 1949. Volunteered in NKA.

Unit Duties:
The duties of the Medical Unit of 9th Div were:
1. Register the casualties
2. Treat wounded
3. Pick up dead on battlefield and bury them.

Morale:
PW had high morale since induction due to specialized training he received, no excessive fatigue, sufficient food and pleasant duty conditions. Received information of victory and how the war would end in favor of NKA. When PW was in SINBAN-NI and did not receive any air support from the USSR which they had been promised, and saw the large number of men killed and wounded, the morale of PW and the entire unit dropped.
The jet propelled F-80 fighter planes were the most feared weapon.
Russia does not help NK for following reasons:
1. Afraid of UN Force
2. Not adequately prepared for World War III.

Leaflets:
In SINBAN-NI o/a 20 Sep 50 PW was "Safe Conduct Pass". Tried to surrender but did not have the chance to do so.
