2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very intelligent and cooperative. Surrendered with 11 of his men to ROK forces.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
2 Dec 46 - PW was inducted into the army at SINUIJU. Received basic infantry training and was assigned to the 5th Co, 2nd Bn, 1st Regt, 1st Div. Perfirned various garrison duties up to 7th Mar 48.
8 Mar 48 - PW was transferred to ANJU (安州), traveled by rail and was assigned to the Ind Bn of the 1st Div 11 Mar 48. PW was promoted to Sgt 5 May 49.
20 Oct 49 - PW departed by rail and arrived at P’YONGYANG 21 Oct 49. Assigned to the "Transportation Brigade."
10 Jul 50 - PW 1s Brigade departed by rail for CH'ORWON and arrived 14 Jul 50. PW then was transferred to the newly organized 17th Armored Brigade and commissioned Lt.
21 Jul 50 - PW’s Brigade departed by rail and arrived at SINNIM-NI (新林里) 6 Aug 50.
7 Aug 50 - Brigade marched and arrived at YONGJU (原州). 9 Aug 50. PW’s brigade had the mission of caring for all replacements and transients in their area.
25 Sep 50 - Brigade started to retreat toward WONJU (原州). PW was left behind to care for the wounded and to arrange for the shipment of remaining materiel to WONJU.
27 Sep 50- ROK troops entered YONGJU (榮州). PW decided that the situation was hopeless, so he gathered 11 of his men and sought out ROK troops. Surrendered at P’UNGGI (豐基).
17th Armored Brigade TO&E consisted of two SP Gun Bns and two infantry Cos. Each SP Gun Bn consisted of approx 105 men. Each infantry Co consisted of 130 men all armed with PPSH and SMG.

Equipment (Original T/E):
21 SU-100 85mm self propelled guns in each Bn
5 man crew: driver, ass’t driver, gunner, ammo-loader, commander
Bn and Co Commanders are also included as crew members

Ammunition:
55 rounds per SU-100 85mm
KTM-1 and T-5 combination fuze are used, also armor piercing shells

Fuel:
Approx 810 litres fuel per tank. Light and heavy diesel oil used. Reserve tanks of lubricating oil also carried. Infantry troops ride on the top and back of the tanks while traveling. A Unit wf 4 motorcycles is attached to the Brigade.

Personalities:
171th Armored Brigade Chief of Staff - Col CHONG Kang (정강) Age - approx - 32. He was acting brigade CO until the new Commander arrived. Name unk, but was a former officer of the Chinese Army - Rank Sr Col. Col CHONG KANG fought in CHINA as a guerrilla leader with KIM IL SONG.

Actual Battle Organization and strength:
17th Armored Brigade - approx 500 men.

Last Known Composition of Unit:
All of the SU-100 85mm self propelled tanks were destroyed. 98% of the 17 Armored Brigade personnel were either kiled or wounded.

Remarks:
ROK officers had show them locations of the destroyed tanks. PW’s statements verified. All tanks were accounted for.

Morale and Propaganda:
Troops were told by the Political officers that RUSSIA was going to supply NKA with a strong Air Forces. Troops never did see these ~lanes and were very resentful about the lack of air support. UN fighter aircraft was the most feared weapon. Troops disorganized because of the swift movements of UN Forces.
