FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS LDI - 0191) 25 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was fairly cooperative, but due to lack of military knowledge and poor memory, information was limited. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TO/E, DISPOSITION:
a. Own Unit.
PW was initially inducted into the Chinese Nationalist 71st Army at CHIANGSHI Province in Mar 47, and was later captured and impressed into service with the 38th Army, 113th Div of the CCF in Nov 47, at CHINSI, MANCHURIA.
Prior to coming into KOREA the 38th Army was stationed in KAIYUEN (開原), MANCHURIA. 20 Oct 50, the 3rd Bn of the 9th Regt, 114th Div departed KAIYUEN by train and crossed the Korean border o/a 25 Oct 50 via CHIAN, MANCHURIA. The exact location of the river crossing was unknown. They detrained at a fairly large RR station which was located about one hour's train ride from the river crossing point. En marched southward for approx 7 days on the main road before they took to mountain trails leading towards the southwest. During this period of their march they passed one large unidentified town. After marching for approx 13 more days via mountain trails and arrived at a mountain approx 8 km N of SOMIN-DONG (BV-5817), where he separated from his unit 21 Nov 50 because of an extreme case of frost bite. He remained at a farmer's home for aporox 3 days before being captured.
114th Div was composed of three infantry regiments: the 7th, 8th, and the 9th. In each regiment there were three infantry battalions and one mortar company. In each battalion there were three infantry companies, one heavy weapons company, one signal platoon, one supply platoon, and a medical platoon. In each company (120 men) there were two infantry platoons, and a 60mm mortar platoon.
In an infantry company the following were: 6 US LMGs (700 rounds each), 9 US Carbines (180 rounds each), 18 US M-1 rifles (80 rounds each), 3 Chinese make 60mm Mortars (30 shells each), four Pistols, and four grenades per man.
They received two meals per day (500 grams daily) which consisted of corn. Where and how often the food rations were brought by trucks were unknown. Subject heard from fellow PWs that the corn was shipped from MANCHURIA.
The communication between Sqd, Plat, and Cp was by runners. Field phones were. used for communication above company level.
PW did not know the immediate mission of his unit. All he knew was that he was told by the officer to come to KOREA in order to protect his country from being attacked by the UN Forces. PW did not know the immediate mission of the Bn except that it was believed headed for SOMIN-DONG.

4. ENEMY LOSSES:
There were no losses in his unit since their arrival into KOREA, because his unit did not see any action or meet with enemy opposition.

7th Co CO: LEE TING WU (李延梧), age approx 40 yrs
3rd Mortar Plat Ldr: LIU MING SHIN (劉明新), age approx 30 yrs

6. MISCELLANEOUS:
a. Enemy Methods
PW stated that the unit marched only, at nights and during this travel no lights of any sort were used. They forced farmers or villagers to act as their guides.

b. Morale.
PW stated that the morale of the troops of the 3rd Bn was low, because they were in fear of the enemy aircraft that flew constantly above them which made them restless and because they did not have enough weapons to fight against the enemy.
