FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI - 1255) 25 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative but very unobservant.
Information seems not too reliable.
PW appeared in good physical condition. Because of the unfamiliarity with KOREA, the PW was unable to furnish exact routes and locations where his unit traveled after entering KOREA.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH:
PW did not know how many Armies are in the 4th Field Army besides the 42nd Army.
42nd Army composed of 3 Inf Divisions (124th, 125th and 126th).
125th Div composed of 3 Inf Regiments.
3rd Regt composed of 3 Inf Bns.
2nd Bn composed of 3 Inf Companies.
2nd Co composed of 3 Inf Platoons.
2nd Platoon composed of 3 Inf Squads.
Each squad' consisted of 12 men.
2nd Platoon, 3rd Company:
a. Personnel: 2 officers and 34 EM.
b. Equipment and ammo:
4 Chinese Automatic Rifles (冲鳳槍) (30 rds per)
24 Model 99 rifles (Jap) (100 rds per)
2 LMGs (type, Cal unk) (300 rds per)
2 Mozel Pistols (German) (30 rds per)
Handgrenade 3 per man
3rd Company, 2nd Bn:
a. Personnel: 5 officers and 175 EM.
b. Equipment and ammo:
Equipment other than previously mentioned.
2 HMGs (type, Cal unk) (rds unk)
2 Mortars (type & cal unk) (rds unk)
2nd Bn, 3rd Regiment:
a. Personnel: 21 officers and 519 EM.
b. Equipment and ammo:
No equipment other than previously mentioned.
3rd Regt, 125th Division:
a. Personnel: Approx 1,500 officers and EM.

4. MISCELLANEOUS:
PW did not see any North Koreans in his unit either before or after crossing the YALU River.
The PW’s unit was intact and under the same chain of command now as it was prior to crossing the YALU.
PW did not know exact strengths of Division and Army.
Parts of PW's unit had never been integrated into Korean units.

5. LOCATION & ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
After entering KOREA from PA-TAO-KOU (八道溝) in MANCHURIA on 1 Oct 50, the PW's battalion travelled only at night, sleeping in mountains during the day. They did not prepare any elaborate defensive positions during their travel South.
After marching for approx 23 days at nights, they arrived at an unknown location. The entire 2nd Bn (PW’s unit) was forced to dig fox holes because of UN air activity. During this period. PW deserted his unit and hid in a nearby village, PW was captured by ROK troops.
Entire 2nd Bn came to KOREA, crossing the YALU River by boat. He did not witness any other units coming with them.
PW heard that the entire 42nd Army would come to KOREA.

6. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted on 4 June 46 into the Nationalist Army at HONAN SHENG (河南城) where PW received 3 months of Infantry training.
Departed from HONAN SHENG o/a 1 Jan 47 by train and arrived at SZECHWAN SHENG (四州省).
Departed from SZECHWAN SHENG o/a 10 Jan 47 by train and arrived at SIANG SHENG (西安省) on 22 Feb 47.
Departed from SIANG SHENG o/a 30 Oct 48 by train and arrived at YUNNAN SHENG (雲南省) on 6 Nov 48.
Departed from YUHNAN SHENG o/a 10 Feb 49 by train and arrived at LU-SAN (雲山).
Captured by the 8th Route Army in WU-LI-OHUAN (五里川) o/a 30 Oct 49.
Moved to LU-SHIH-HSIEN (盧氏縣) and received approx 5 months of indoctrination.
Moved to HA-EIH-PIN (哈爾濱) on 21 Jan 50.
Assigned to the 4th Field Army, 42nd Army, 125th Div, 3rd Regt, 2nd Bn, 3rd Co, 2nd Plat, 5th Sqd in HA-ERL-PIN, o/a 21 Jan 50.
Departed from HA- ERL-PIN, o/a 20 May 50 by train and arrived at LIN-CHIANG (臨江), where the troops were engaged in RR maintenance for about 3 months.
Departed from LIN-CHIANG o/a 26 Aug 50 (by train) and arrived at TUNG-HUA (通化) about 2 days later.
Departed from TUNG-HUA on 28 Aug 50 by train and arrived at PA-TAO-CHIANG (八道淸) o/a 30 Aug 50. (Only the 2nd Bn of the 3rd Regt, 125th Div came.)
Remained there for about a month, and crossed the YALU River by boat on 1 Oct 50. Points of departure and entry into KOREA were unknown.
After entering KOREA, the 2nd Bn proceeded West along a secondary road. Exact route which the PW's unit followed was not known to the PW because of his unfamiliarity with KOREA.
PW did not know whether or not the entire 42nd Army came to KOREA because he had not seen the rest of his unit since departing TUNG-HAU o/a 28 Aug 50.

7. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
The troops did not bring any extra food when they crossed the YALU.
They confiscated food from nearby villages as they advanced South.
PW received only one issue of 100 rds of small anus ammo when they left PA-TAO-CHIANG (八道江) on 1 Oct 50.

8. MORALE:
Morale of PW's unit was low due to the lack of food, ammunition and constant air attacks since entering KOREA.

9. SIGNAL COMMUNICATION:
Field telephone was used in PW's 2nd Battalion.

10. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW was not a volunteer for Korean service.
Instructions haq not been given to CCF soldiers to appear to be volunteers if captured.
PW had not heard anything about the Iron and Steel Brigade.
There were no Japanese Units in the CCF.
Pay Rate: Per month
  Pvt (戰士)-70,000 Yuan
  Plat Ldr (排長)-140,000 Yuan
  Co C.O. (連長)-160,000 Yuan
PW presumed that all former Nationalist soldiers, if captured, were inducted into the CCF. Captured equipment was utilized by the CCF in the present war.
