FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI - 1220) 15 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: TIME, Yu Hsao (田有孝) (Chinese)

2. ASSESSMENT:
Interrogation conducted at 24th Div Hospital. PW was wounded in the leg and seemed to be suffering the effect. Re-interrogation recommended under more favorable circumstances. Reliability-fair.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH OF UNITS:
40th Army was composed of the 118th, 119th and 120th Rifle Divisions.
119th Rifle Div was composed of the 355th, 356th and 357th Rifle Regiments and other unknown elements.
355th Rifle Regiment was composed of 3 x Rifle Battalions (1st, 2nd & 3rd).
Each Rifle Bn was composed of 3 x Rifle Companies and 1 x Heavy Weapons company.

2 North Korean interpreters were with PW’s Company after entering KOREA. These interpreters were used to contact Korean civilians. Chinese never were permitted to talk to civilians.
PW’s unit was intact and under the same chain of command after crossing the YALU River as it was prior to crossing.
There were no vehicle with PW’s battalion.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNIT:
The entire 40th Army entered KOREA from ANTUNG o/a 10 Oct 50. 3rd Bn, 355th Regt, 119th Div, 40th Army was separated from other units of the 40th Army and marched every night and hid in mountains during the day. Other details unavailable because PW did not know place names in KOREA.
40th Army, 119th Div, 355th Regt, 3rd Bn, Heavy Weapons Co commander told his unit that the mission of the unit was to attack and drive US Forces cut of KOREA.
PW has no knowledge of other units coming to KOREA.

5. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
PW was inducted into the Chinese Nationalist New 6th Army, 14th Div (新六軍 十四師) during Jan 46 at PURAN TIEN (普蘭店).
After engaging CCF units, PW was captured by the CCF 40th Army at TIENSHIN (天津) Mar 49 and assigned as cook with 40th Army, 119th Div, 355th Regt, 3rd Bn, Heavy Weapons Co.
The 40th Army proceeded to ANTUNG from Central CHINA, arriving at ANTUNG o/a 25 Jul 50.
The entire 40th Army received training near ANTUNG during the period from Jul 50 to Oct 50. Training included rifle firing at moving targets, night marches, night infiltration tactics, and combat discipline.
The 40th Army entered KOREA from ANTUNG o/a 10 Oct 50. 3rd Bn, 355th Regt marched during the night, hiding in mountains during the day. Route of travel was unknown.
During the morning of 11 Nov 50, PW and 5 other cooks from the Heavy Weapons Co, 3rd Bn, 355th Regt were cooking for the Company and went to the hill where the Company was located, but the company had already evacuated from the hill.
PW and 3 others were captured by US 19th Regt, 3rd Bn at an unknown location on 111500 I Nov 50 while trying to locate their unit.

6. PERSONALITIES:

No Russian with 40th Army.

7. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
Two meals a day given to troops of 3rd Bn, 355th Regt, 119th Div after entering KOREA. Meals usually consisted of cooked Kaoling or millet. When available, rice was given.
Food believed to be coming from ANTUNG.

8. ARMOR & ARTILLERY:
Observed no artillery pieces with 40th Army when it entered KOREA o/a 10 Oct 50.
Observed 10 CCF tanks (type & make unknown) PEKING during Mar 49.

9. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW or his unit did not volunteer for duty in KOREA.
PW, a cook, received 100,000 Yuan per month.
Captured Nationalist soldiers and equipment were used by CCF.
PW was told by his C.O. that they must enter KOREA and oppose US Forces because the US plans to attack CHINA after it "conquers" KOREA.
