BRIDGE HONGUI (洪儀) KOREA
Pvt D/O Apr 49 - Jul 50

Location: (See Sketch 1 - Item #1)
About 12 km E of the HONGUI (洪儀) RR Station (Item #2).

Observation:
PW stated that he observed the bridge from a distance daily when traveling to and from school. Also he saw the bridge when he went hiking with his class to the TUMEN (圖們) River.

Description: (See Sketch 2)
This bridge was formerly a steel bridge and was reinforced with concrete in Apr 49 by Korean laborers. Around Jul 50 PW states that he saw tanks, artillery pieces and trucks loaded with ammunition crossing over the bridge from the Russian side. These were loaded onto trains at the HONGUI (洪儀) RR Station for transportation to other parts of KOREA.
PW heard that a railroad line was to be built parallel to the road leading to the concrete bridge. He states that plans were made in 1940, however, the actual construction was not started until May 50. A RR roadbed was constructed 2 km from and parallel to the road leading from HONGUI (洪儀) north towards the TUMEN River. But this construction was stopped in June of 50 because the war had started and too many people working on the construction might attract attention from the air.
PW states that a bridge was to be constructed over the river to allow Russian trains to come over to KOREA and to let Korean trains into RUSSIA. Therefore, there were to be two different gauge tracks laid on this planned bridge. No further information from PW concerning the bridge.

PW observed the pillboxes when he went on a hike with his classmates to the seashore.

Description:
PW states that pillboxes, constructed of concrete and circular in shape (3 m x 4 m) with slits for guns, were built 100 m. inland along the coast. He stated that the pillboxes were guarded by NK soldiers and therefore, he could not go too close. The pillboxes had slit trench exits covered with grass and dirt for camouflage purposes.
