FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI - 1247) 23 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative, in good physical condition. Although PW received no formal education he is literate, alert and intelligent. PW allegedly has a passionate hate far Communism. Information seems reliable.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH OF UNITS: (as of 18 Nov 50)
38th Army is composed of the 112th, 113th, and 114th Divisions.
114th Div is composed of the 341st, 342nd, and 343rd Regiments.
342nd Regt is composed of 3 Battalions.
1st Bn is composed of 3 Rifle Companies and HMG Co.
1st Co is composed of 3 Rifle Platoons plus Mortar Platoon.
1st Plat is composed or 3 Sqds with 11 to 12 men per squad.
1st Co, 1st Bn, 342nd Regt, 114th Div:
a. Personnel: 10 officers and 150 EM
b. Equipment & ammo:

1st Bn, 342nd Regiment:
a. Personnel: Estimated 700
Each company of the 342nd Regt has one Korean. Koreans serve as interpreters and joined the 114th Div at KAI YUAN (開原), MANCHURIA.
PW heard that there are a few Japanese in the 38th Army but he has never seen any.
PW heard from his officers that the 114th Div is intact and under the same chain of command now as it was prior to crossing the YALU River into KOREA.

4. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted into the 38th Army on 30 Jul 49 at KAI YUAN (開原).
Departed from KAI-YUAN (開原) o/a 23 Oct 50 by train with the 342nd Regt and arrived at TUNG-HUA o/a 24 Oct 50.
Departed from TUNG-HUA o/a 24 Oct 50 and. arrived at CHI-AN (BA 7355) o/a 25 Oct 50.
Departed from CHI-AM o/a 251800 I Oct 50, by train and arrived at MANPOJIN o/a 251900 I Oct 50.
Departed from MANPOJIN o/a 25 Oct 50, marched (at night only) with the 342nd Regt and arrived at KUJANG-DONG (YE 5518) o/a 31 Oct 50.
Departed from KUJANG-DONG o/a 31 Oct 50 after a two hour fight against UN forces, marched and gradually withdrew to HUICHON (熙川), arriving 8 Nov 50.
18 Nov 50, PW went with one other EM into an unidentified village (approx 5 km north of HUICHON) in search of food. When they paused to urinate at 181500 I Nov 50, they were fired on by ROK troops and surrendered immediately.

5. PERSONALITIES:
There were no Soviet advisors in the 114th Div, according to PW.

6. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
When the 342nd Regt departed from KAI-YUAN (開原), MANCHURIA o/a 23 Oct 50, rations sufficient for 8 days were brought. Upon arrival in KOREA, the Korean interpreters in the regiment made arrangements with North Korean village leaders to supply the regiment with food.

7. US PW’S:
Observed 3 US PW’s o/a 3 Nov 50 approx 2 km north of KUJANG DONG. PW’s were being led northward by 5 NKA soldiers down a large automobile road.

8. MORALE:
All personnel in the 342nd Regt had low morale with the exception of officers and Communist Party members. Morale was low because the soldiers had no interest in fighting in KOREA.

9. SIGNAL INFO:
The following means of communication were available to the 342nd Regiment units:
Telephone- At Regt and Bn levels.
Semaphore Signal Flags- At Regt, Bn and Co levels.
Signal Flare Pistol- At Regt, Bn and Co levels.
Courier- At all levels.
Bugle- At Regt, Bn and Co levels.
Whistle- At Regt, Bn and Co levels.


10. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW was not a volunteer for Korean service; the 114th Div was not a volunteer unit, but PW was instructed by his Co Commander and Political Officer to state that he was a volunteer in the event of capture.
The 114th Div has received no amphibious training, according to PW.
PW never heard of the Iron and Steel Brigade.
Various pay grades in the 342nd Regt are as follows:

PW knows of no paratroops in the CCF.
PW does not believe that the CCF has armored units.
CNA soldiers and equipment are integrated into the CCF units capturing them,
The 342nd Regt CO instructed his men o/a 21 Oct 50 that the CCF was going to liberate KOREA because the US imperialistic troops and their ROK puppets constitute a threat to CHINA’s security. He stated that the NKA had fought valiantly but lacked sufficient personnel to defeat the US. He concluded that since the size of the CCF is enormous, victory for the CCF and NKA, would be certain.
