2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and sincere.
He was in good physical condition at the time of interrogation.
Information seems reliable.
PW stated that he experienced better treatment with the Nationalist Army than in the CCF because he ate more food, had better pay and clothing previously.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH OF:
4th Field Army (4野戰軍), 13th Army Group (13兵團), 38th Army (38軍), 113th Div (113師), 338th Regt (338団), 1st Bn Hq (1營付) (as of Sep 50).
4th Field Army composed of the 13th Army Group and other unknown Army Groups.
13th Army Group composed of the 38th, 39th, 40th, 41st and 42nd Armies.
38th Army composed of the 112th, 113th and 114th Divisions.
113th Division composed of the 4th, 5th, and 6th Regiments.
5th Regiment composed of 3 x Infantry Battalions and l x HMG Battalion.
Each Infantry Company composed of 5 x Platoons: 1st, 2nd, 3rd rifle platoon, 1 Mortar platoon, and 1 Service platoon which was attached directly to each Infantry Company.
Each Infantry Platoon was composed of 4 squads: 3 rifle squads and a LMG squad.

Each Battalion had two North Koreans, and each Company had one North Korean who were used as interpreters, and who came with the 38th Army from MANCHURIA.
PW's unit was intact and under the same chain of command now as it was prior to crossing the YALU River.
No parts of PW's unit had been integrated. into Korean units.
Prior to entering NORTH KOREA, the code name of the 338th Regt, 1st Bn Hq was the "TUNG-AN-BU" (section), 2nd Branch Unit, 38th Bn, 1st Sub-section (東安部 2支隊 38大隊 1分隊).

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNIT:
1st Battalion Headquarters of the 338th Regiment, 113th Division, was located approximately 4 km (direction unknown) of TAEAN SAN (泰安站) or TSUDAMI (都大廟) until 8 Nov 50.
PW was separated from the 1st Battalion during the battle with UN troops at the above-mentioned place (location unknown) 8 Nov 50.
PW's unit was disorganized during the battle and was retreating toward the west into a mountain (location unknown).
PW believed that all the units (1st, 2nd and 3rd Companies) of PW's 1st Battalion were located in that vicinity at the time of his separation on 8 Nov 50.

LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNIT:
After entering KOREA o/a 2 Nov 50, the PW's Battalion travelled only at night, sleeping in fox holes during the day. They did not participate in preparing any defensive positions during their travel south.
PW heard in the Battalion Headquarters that the objective of PW's unit was SINANJU (新義州).

Personal & Unit History:
PW served with the Nationalist Array from Aug 47 to Sep 48 and was captured by Gth Route Army (CCF) (8路軍) on Sep 48 at CHING JU (鵭州).
PW was assigned to a Replacement Regt (補充團) for approx 2 months. During this period, he received Infantry Training and communist indoctrination.
PW was transferred to the 38th Army, lst Company at SHENYANG (瀋陽) on Oct 48. With the unit, PW traveled through the following places: TIEN-TSIN (天津), SHAN-TUNG (山東), HONAN (河南), HUPEN (湖月北), HUNAN (湖南), KWEICHOW (貴州), KWANGSI (廣西), HONAN (河南) on foot. From HONAN the unit travelled by rail and arrived at KAIYUAN (開原) via SHENYANG (瀋陽) in Aug 50.
PW did not remember when the 38th Army, 1st Company became part of the 49th Field Army, 13th Army Group, 38th Army, 113th Division, 338th Regiment, 1st Battalion, but it has been the same unit since Oct 48.
On or about 30 Oct 50, the entire 113th Division of the 38th Army departed KAIYUAN by train and crossed the YALU River o/a 2 Nov 50 via MANPOJIN in KOREA.
PW heard that the 112th Division of the 38th Army, the 39th Army and the 42nd Army of the 4th Field Army, came to KOREA.
PW's unit (38th Army) did not participate in the invasion of HAINAN Island.

LIN (full name unknown) ALIAS: TA-YA (大牙), CG, 38th Army, 4th Field Army.
KUO (郭) (fnu), CO, 1st Bn, 338th Regt, 113th Div, 38th Army.

6. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
Troops of the 38th Army, brought 3 days ration when they crossed the YALU River o/a 2 Nov 50. The 38th Army received food supplies after entering KOREA (route and source unknown) o/a 5 Nov 50. They have also confiscated food from villages, as they advanced.

7. SIGNAL COMMUNICATIONS:
PW's unit (Battalion Headquarters) had one wireless set and one field telephone which were used between Battalion Headquarters and Division Headquarters.

8. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW did not volunteer for Korean service.
CCF troops were told not to surrender to UN troops because they would all be murdered. No instructions were given to CCF troops to appear to be volunteers if captured.
PW’s unit did not have any amphibious training.
PW has never heard of the Iron and Steel Brigade.
There was no Japanese unit in the CCF.
PW did not know of any other unit other than the regular troops of his unit.
PAY RATE: Pvt (戰士) - 70,000 Yuan
Company Commander - 100,000 Yuan

No Soviet equipment was used in the CCF.
PW did not know when CCF troops started moving to MANCHURIA.
PW did not know of any paratroop training or paratroops in the CCF.
PW did not know whether the Chinese were recruiting in MANCHURIA.
70% of 38th Army troops were former Nationalist Army personnel.
Captured equipment was utilized by CCF troops in the present war.
He never saw nor heard any general line of propaganda instruction by political officers to troops.
