FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI - 1254) 24 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: TIEN, Chon (田鎭) (Chinese)
RANK: Pfc (一等兵)
ORGN: 4th Field Army, 38th Army, 112th Div, 334th Regt, Signal Plat, 2nd Sqd (code name: See “T/O & E”) (四野戰軍 三八軍 一一二師 三三四団通 信排 二班)
DUTIES: Messenger (Between Regt & Bn)

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative but confused. PW was a slow talker and had bad eye eight.
Although the PW seemed confused about dates and places through which he has traveled, he seemed concise and certain in answering various other questions.
Information seems reliable.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH OF:
1 Aug 50 at TIEH-LING (鉄嶺), the 38th Army, 112th Div, 334th Regt, Signal Plat, 2nd sqd was redesignated as TUNG-AN-PU (同安部), 1st Branch Unit (一支隊), 1st TA TUI (一大隊), Signal Plat, 2nd Sqd.
There were 4 Inf Divisions, but in April 50 the 114th Div went to CHINGTAO (靑島) from TIEH LING to wipe out guerrilla pockets.
PW heard that the 115th Div was to replace the 114th Div but PW did not see this unit.

38th Army: 4 Inf Divisions (111th, 112th, 113th, 114th)
112th Div: 3 Inf Regiments (334th, 335th, 336th), Guard Bn, Arty Regt (code number for Arty Regt unknown)
334th Regt: 3 Inf Battalions, Guard Co, Signal Plat, Tel Plat, Med Sqd, Supply Unit
1st Battalion: 3 Inf Companies, 1 x HMG Co
Inf Company: 3 Inf Platoons

In Oct 50 at TUNG-HUA (通化) PW saw over 100 North Korean officers (interpreters) who were trousers with red piping, some of whom told them that they came from KOREA.
7 Officer were attached to each regiment, while one officer was distributed to each rifle company.
PW's unit was intact and under the same chain of command now as it was prior to crossing the YALU River. After crossing the YALU, he saw two Russian officers, rank unknown, directing artillery fire against UN forces on Nov 50 at HUICHON (BV 6849).
PW believed the chain of command might have been changed since crossing the YAUL.
Parts of PW’s unit were not integrated into Korean units.

4. LOCATION & ACTIVITIES OF UNIT: (as of 20 Nov 50)
PW’s unit came to KOREA to fight the “RHEE Republic” because his troops would eventually invade MANCHURIA.
As of 20 Nov 50, the 334th, 335th and 336th Regiments were in the vicinity of KUJANG DONG. The PW knew that the 334th, 335th, 336th Regts were in the area because he saw 335th, 336th Regiment personnel. He also sail soldiers from tho 336th and 335th Regiments while at HUICHON, The 334th Hq was located 8 km South of KUJANG DONG with the 335th and 336th Regt Hq about 6 km apart from the 334th Regt Hq.
2nd Bn Hq was on the East, 3rd Bn Hq was on the NE and 1st Bn Hq was on the South of the 334th Regt Hq.
20 Nov 50, after contacting American troops, the 334th Regt retreated toward HUICHOH (BV 6849) without any fight. At 1600 hours, PW surrendered to the American troops.
If they had met the ROK troops they would have fought them, not the Americans. There were Arty positions in the mountains near HUICHON (BV 6849), as of 20 Nov 50.
Nov 50 at HUICHON they constructed trenches, machine gun nests (sandbag construction) and fox holes on a mountain adjacent to the town on the west.
On a hill to the north of the town, trenches, fox holes, machine gun nest (sandbag construction) and unknown numbers of artillery entrenchments were constructed. From his hill, mortars could be fired into the town of HUICHON.
On the East of the town, near a single RR track line, artillery positions had been prepared.
South of the town near a river, another artillery position was constructed.

6. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Conscripted into the CNA, 49th Army, 105th Div in May 48 at CHILIN (吉林). Received, 3 months of basic infantry training at CHILIN (吉林).
105th Div left CHILIN (吉林) by train in Aug 48 and arrived at HUNAN SHENG, KAIFENG (湖南省 開料) in Sept 48. Fought against CCF troops.
In Oct 48, 1 Regt surrendered to the CCF 38th Army and was placed into the CCF 38th Army. PW was placed into the 38th Army, 112th Div, 334th Regt at HUNAN SHENG (湖南省), KAIFENG. Received 2 weeks of infantry basic training.
38th Army left HUNAN SHENG, KAIFENG in March 49 by foot and arrived at LIYUNAN SHIEN (汝南縣) in March 49.
334th Regt left LIYUNAN SHIEH, March 49, by foot and arrived at SHA SHIL (沙市) in May 49. PW was hospitalized for malaria.
After being released from the hospital, PW and 16 others left SHA SHU, Feb 50 by train and arrived at HANKOU (漢口) in Feb 50, here they rejoined the 334th Regiment.
334th Regt, left HANKOU by train in Feb 50 and arrived at TIEHLING (鐵嶺) in April 50.
334th Regt left TIEHLING, by train in April 50 and arrived at LIN-CHIANG (鐵嶺) in April 50 after by-passing TUNG HUA (通化). Received. combat mountain training for 5 months.
334th Regt left LIN-CHIANG, in the latter part of Sept 50 by train and arrived at CHI-AN (輯安) via TUNGHWA in Oct 50.
The following night, PW rode a train which had 20 cars (70 men in PW’s car) and after riding for some days, they arrived in a small Korean RR station in Oct 50.
After a number of days of marching, the 334th Regt arrived at HUICHON. They fought elements of ROK troops and later constructed defense positions.
334th, 335th and 336th Regiments left HUICHON on 17 Nov 50 by foot and arrived at KUJANG DONG.

7. PERSONALITIES:
LI, Chang Ching (李長淸), Regt CO, 334th Regiment.

8. RUSSIAN PERSONNEL:
Two Russian officers directed CCF artillery fire on UN troops at HUICHON in Nov 50. Rank and names, unknown.
An unknown number of Russian soldiers were at TUNGHUA RR Station, in the latter part of Sept 50.

9. ARMOR & ARTILLERY:
PW did not see any tanks or artillery cross the YALU River, but he saw 2 howitzers and one mountain gun, Caliber unknown, from a distance located in a hill NE of HUICHON in Nov 50. PW heard that there were 7 howitzers in the mountain surrounding the town.

10. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
Soldiers brought 10 days ration when they came into KOREA.
In Nov 50, while at HUICHON, PW saw 6 truck loads of food supplies going forward.
Source of food and ammo supplies unknown.

11. SIGNAL COMMUNICATION:
Communication between regiment and battalion was by messenger; between division and regiment telephones were used.

12. MORALE:
The morale in PW's unit via a very low because they were constantly strafed by UN aircraft. Furthermore, there were many former NCA troops in CCF units.

13. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW was not a volunteer for Korean service nor was his unit.
No instructions had been given to CCF soldiers to appear to be volunteers if captured.
PW’s unit did not undergo amphibious training.
PW has not heard of the Iron and Steel Brigade.
PW heard that there were Japanese doctors in the 38th Army.
Chinese Communists did not have Militia and Public Security Units in addition to their regular troops.
PW received 110,000 Yuan per month; wage of others unknown.
PW did not know of any paratroop training or paratroops in the CCF.
Propaganda officer taught soldiers not to desert the CCF because it is a Peoples Army.
While in KOREA, the Regt commander slept under crudely constructed log shacks while all others slept in fox holes.
