FIELD REPORT (2 - LDI - 0032) 18 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Evaluation: PW was cooperative but he was unfamiliar with the terrain and name of places. Information given was limited but considered reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. ORGANIZATION, STRENGTH AND DISPOSITION:
14 July 1949 PW was drafted into the North Korean Army in South HAMKYONG Province. After entering the North Korean Army, PW was assigned to 38th Parallel Security Force, Hqs located in SIPHYON-NI, HWANGHAE-DO. Aug 50 38th Parallel Security Force was reorganized into 7th Div in SEOUL. (Strength of 7th Div unk)
About middle Sep 50 the 7th Dlv Hqs began to retreat northward from CH'UNGGYO-RI. (Location of Hqs when 7th Div was located in NAM River Area.) The same day the 51st Regt, 52nd Regt and 53rd Regt also began to retreat northward.
PW stated the movements were made in four separate groups. Each Regt formed a group and 7th Div Hqs formed a group. Estimated strength of Hqs group was approx 1500 men. The strength of each Regt was about 1000 men.
After the 3rd day from CHUNGGYO-RI, 7th Div assembled in the mountain area (loc. unk) and began its movement toward north with four separate groups under the command of Div Commander. The groups took only mountain trails during the movements and travelled only at nights to prevent from aircraft observation and attack from UN Ground Forces.
14 Nov 50 7th Div arrived in TAEDONG-NI (BU9432) with strength of approx 5000 men. PW stated that the Unit gathered all stragglers during the time groups travelled north to TAEDONG-NI (BU9432).
Upon arrival to TAEDONG-NI, PW observed the following weapons in one of the Regts; (PW does not know which regt of the 7th Div) 3x82mm mortars, 2 M1910 HMG's, 27x7.62mm DP LMG's, unk member of automatic rifles and rifles.
PW was previously assigned to the reconnaissance company under the command of 7th Div Hqs with the strength of 70 men.
15 Nov 50 the 2nd platoon (PW’s Plat) with the strength of 13 men were dispatched from TAEDONG-NI (7th Div Hqs) with the mission of reconnoitering the NAMYANG-NI (BU7884) Area for enemy situation. The 7th Div was scheduled to move into NAMYANG-NI 17 Nov 50.
17 Nov 50 2nd platoon arrived in TOGYONG -NI (BU7231). PW had no knowledge of the purpose of going west instead of north where NAMYANGNI is located. About 1200 hrs when the group of 13 men (2nd plat) was preparing noon meal in the small village (vie of TOGYONG-NI) the group encountered UN Force and scattered. PW surrendered to the UN Forces.

4. MISSION:
PW has no knowledge of the present mission of the 7th Div; however, he thinks that 7th Div is working northward trying to contact active units. Up to 17 Nov 50 7th Div made no contact with other units.

5. ENEMY SUPPLY AND EQUIPMENTS:
Food:
7th Div personnel obtained food from Peoples Committee located in each village. Peoples Committee of each village takes in rice for the government in place of tax. The troops have 3 meals daily.

Ammo:
PW stated that ammo is very low especially for the 82mm mortars. Each rifleman carried about 40 rounds.

Clothing:
PW stated that all troops of the 7th Div are still in summer uniform. No winter clothing has been issued to the troops.
All troops slept out doors. Due to inadequate clothing, many became sick. PW stated no fire is allowed.

b. Morale:
The morale among the troops is very low due to inadequate clothing. PW stated that some of the soldiers have no shoes.
Members of 7th Div do not believe that CCF Units are in KOREA fighting for North Korean Forces. Since none of the personnel saw any CCF Units even though they were told this by their Unit Commander.
