FIELD REPORT (528 - MISPI - 0137) 24 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. PW was a student prior to being inducted into the NKA. PW was cooperative and of average interrogation. PW could not recall dates. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW was conscripted into NKA 5 Oct 50 at CHINJIRI (YD1093). PW received no training and was assigned to the 46th. Div, Recon Co located in vic of YONGGANG (YD0304) 6 Oct 50. PW’s unit remained at this location for approx 15 days receiving lectures on military subjects. The entire 46th Div then marched to SUKCH’ON (YD2665) arriving o/a 22 Oct 50. PW’s unit remained at SUKCH’ON for approx one week during which time the unit received lectures on military subjects. (The Recon Co was not equipped with weapons, therefore training consisted of lectures only.) 46th Div then departed SUKCH'ON and arrived at YONGBYON (YE4011) o/a 29 Oct 50. The unit rested at this location for 2 to 3 days. 46th Div then departed for PALWON (YE3518) arriving o/a 31 Oct 50. On the way to PALWON, the men received their weapons. The Div remained at PALWON for one day then departed for TAECH'ON (YE1322) arriving o/a 1 Nov 50. PW’s unit remained at TAECH’ON for approx 5 days then marched to YONGTOE-TONG (YE0626) arriving o/a 6 Nov 50. PW's unit remained at this location for approx 2 days then took mountain trails and arrived at TAEGWAN (XE8753) o/a & Nov 50. PW's unit remained at this location for 2 days then departed for KUSONG (XE9228) arriving o/a 10 Nov 50. PW's unit remained overnight at this location then marched back to TAECH’ON (YE1322) o/a 11 Nov 50. From TAECH'ON, marched to PALWON (YE3518) arriving on sane day. Remained at this location for approx 2 days then returned to TAECH'ON arriving o/a 13 Nov 50. Remained for approx 2 days then marched to vic 6 km E of KUSONG (XE9228) arriving o/a 15 Nov 50. PW’s unit remained for approx 4 days then departed for OBON-MYON (XE9816) arriving o/a 19 Nov 50. Remained at this location for one day then departed for vic 6 km S of OBON-MYON arriving on 20 Nov 50. PW's unit remained overnight then departed for PYONGJIWON (YD1097) arriving on 21 Nov 50. Remained overnight and on 22 Nov 50 PW accompanied his Plat Ldr to vic 7 km SW of PYONGJIWON to contact the Recon Co CO. PW remained and 230800 Nov 50, PW and 3 others departed for SINHUNG-RI (YE0045). After walking for about an hour PW’s group encountered US troops, so PW and another soldier surrendered to this force.

b Unit Organization and Strength:
46th Div consisted of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Regts. Each Regt consisted of 3 Inf Bns with 3 Cos in each Bn. The Recon Co was directly assigned to the Div. There were originally 3 Plat's in the Recon Co but PW stated that one Plat was sent on DS to Corps Hqs (designation u/k). PW heard that there was also on Arty Regt in the Div.
The Recon Co had an original strength of approx 100 men but at time PW left his unit there were only 50 men in the Co. PW stated that the reduction in strength was due to one Plat (25 men) being sent on DS and approx 25 deserters. Strength of Div and Regts unk.

c. Equipment:
PW did not observe any artillery or mortars in the 46th Div. PW stated that the Recon Co was always at the head of the column so he could not observe the equipment carried by the Div. Recon Co was equipped with Russian carbines and SMGs.

d. Disposition:
PW heard that the 46th Div GP was located approx 16 km NE of PYONGJIWON (YD1097) on 22 Nov 50. PW heard that the 3rd Regt was also in the vic of PYONGJIWON and the Arty Regt was at TAEGWAN (XE8753) receiving training. Disposition of 1st and 2nd Regts unk.

e. Knowledge of Other Units:
PW observed approx 50 CCF troops at vic 34 km S of KUSONG (XE9228} on the main highway o/a 20 Nov 50. The troops were dug in on a hill and their positions were camouflaged with branches. No heavy equipment observed. PW observed another group of approx 50 CCF troops midway between TAECH’ON (YE1322) and KUSONG (YE9228) (exact location u/k) o/a 16 Nov 50. The troops were seen digging in on a hill alongside the main road, No heavy equipment was observed. PW observed approx 25 stragglers approx 8 km S of KUSONG heading towards KUSONG o/a 16 Nov 50. The stragglers were armed with rifles.
PW observed elements of the 47th Div and the 105th Div (strength u/k) entering KUSONG o/a 15 Nov 50. PW stated he obtained the designation of the above units from recon personnel of the above units.

f. Personalities:
LEE, Chong Ku, Lt, CO, Recon Co, 46th Div.

g. Armor and Artillery:
PW observed 3 tanks (size u/k) at YONGBYON (YE4011) moving east o/a 29 Oct 50.
PW observed what appeared to be 6x122mm howitzers on the night of 15 Nov 50, entering KUSONG,

4. GENERAL:
a. Food and Ammo Supplies:
Food was procured locally and was adequate. Personnel in the Recon Co were issued approx 60 rds of s/a ammo. PW did not observe any signs of ammo supplies being transported from the rear. Each man was issued one hand grenade.

b. US PWs:
PW observed 3 US PWs at TAECH’ON (YE1322) o/a 13 Nov 50. These prisoners were seen being marched toward the 46th Div CP. The prisoners appeared to be in good physical condition.

c. Miscellaneous:
PW was told by his Co CO that the CCF came to aid the NK Army be cause when CHINA was involved in the conflict with JAPAN, many North Koreans were aiding CHINA.
