FIELD REPORT (2 - LDI - 0033) 19 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: KIM Un Nong (20)
RANK: Pvt
DUTY: Rifleman
UNIT: 19th Div, 1st Regt attached LMG Co, 2nd Plat, 3rd Sqd.
PLACE AND DATE OF CAPTURE: SONGCHON, 11 Nov 50.

2. ASSESSMENT:
Evaluation: Upon reinterrogation of PW, the info and dates were quite different from previous interrogation, therefore, info given below seems unreliable.
Not recommended for further interrogation.

The 1st Regt separated from 19th Div 25 Sept 50 at NAMCH'ONJON (126 30'-38 15') and the Auto. Rifle Co separated from rest of the Cc 8 Oct 50 at YONGBEK (vic of NAMCH'ONJON).
On or a bout 27 Sept 50 1st, 2nd and 3rd Plats (approx 48 men) of LM: Co were located in the vicinity of YONGBEK but scattered when attacked by ROK troops on or about 29 Sept 50. When the unit scattered the 2nd Plat separated from lat and 3rd Plat (48 men).
25 Oct 50 the 2nd Plat. was reorganized by assembling approx 150 stragglers at this location. 1 Nov 50 the Plat withdrew to unk village located approx 32 KMs north from TONGCHANG (BV6420). Heard that the reason for withdrawing was that ROK troops were ready to attack that village.
0100 hrs 1 Nov 50 at this unk village, PW observed CCF troops headed towards TOKCH’ON (BV7004) area in single file. PW estimates the strength to be about 400, Approx two third of the troops were armed with rifles. The rest were armed with LMGs. Also observed approx 10 x 42mm mortars. This troop movement was observed under moon light.
2 Nov 50 the plat left this unk village and arrived at TOKCH'ON (BV7004) 0100 4 Nov 50. At that time, the CCF and ROK troops were fighting near this village. PW's plat joined with the CCF troops and fought for approx it hrs at which time the ROKs withdrew. Estimated the strength of CCFs to be about 400 from his observation of troops scattered around this area.
1900 5 Nov 50 the plat left TOKCH’ON and arrived at PUKCHANG area (BU7286) 0600 9 Nov 50, The unit traveled by night taking mountain trails. Heard from their leader that their mission was to fight Guerrilla warfare.
1300 9 Nov 50 the plat came in contact with ROK troops and the unit scattered. At this time PW escaped and surrendered to SONGCH'ON Homo Guard (vic of SINGSONG -NI (BU7987)).

WEAPONS & AMMO:
The 1st Regt was armed with approx 40 PPSH Tommy guns, 100 Rifles, 8 LMGs and a 42mm mortars.
Rifles: Approx 70 rds; LMGs: 2 boxes of ammo; PPSH SMG -- 100 rds each; 42mm mortar --15 rds.
As far as the PW knows, this unit only received ammo once since he joined this unit.

FOOD SUPPLY:
The master Sgt who is in charge of feeding the troops went to villages and made them prepare food for the troops. The troops were usually fed rice, millet and vegetables twice a day.

UNIFORM:
Only uniform the troops had was clothes which were picked up.

MORALE:
Believes that morale of his unit was very high since the CCFs joined the Korean war. Heard some of the soldiers saying that they were going to fight till death.

PROPAGANDA:
Heard from Co CO that they do not have to worry about the present defeat since USSR has lots of planes and troops; they are going to help them in the near future. Also told them that planes flying at high altitude at present are all RUSSIANs.
