FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI - 1252) 24 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: TIN, Chung Shin (丁正興) (Chinese)
RANK: Pvt (戰士)
ORGN: 4th Field Army, 40th Army, 119th Div, 356th Regt, 2nd Bn, 5th Co, Arty Plat, 3rd Sqd (4野戰軍 40軍 119師 356団 2營 5連 砲排 3班)
PW received a letter from his father about 3 months ago at ANTUNG. The letter came with the following address: YENJI Unit, 2nd Branch Unit, 5th Co, 2nd Distrkt Unit, Mortar, 2nd Sqd (延吉部隊 二支隊 五中隊 二区隊 臼砲 二分隊). This letter-envelope is enclosed in the PW envelope.
Company political officer prior to departing ANTUNG told the troops that the 40th Army was a self-volunteer army (自願軍), however, PW did not know what this ward represented.

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and gave information freely. Information seems reliable.
PW was very observant. He surrendered.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH:
PW did not know how many armies were in the 4th Field Army, besides PW’s 40th Army.
40th Army composed of 3 Inf Divisions (118th, 119th and 120th).
119th Div composed of 3 Inf Regiments (355th, 356th and 357th).
356th Regt composed of 3 Inf Battalions.
2nd Bn composed of 3 Inf Companies (4th, 5th and 6th) and HMG Company.
5th Company composed of 3 Inf Platoons. and Artillery Platoon.
The Arty Plat composed of 3 Sqds.
Arty sqd consisted of approx 7 men.
Artillery Platoon:
a. Personnel:
2 officers & 24 EM
b. Equipment & ammo:
3 x 60mm Mortar (US) (6 rds per)
Carbine (US) (30 rds)
Pistol (German) (40 rds)
Remarks: No other weapons were observed in the above platoon,

Remarks: PW did not know whether the AT mines were laid in KOREA.
5th Company:
a. Personnel:
7 officers & 115 EM
PW did not observe any North Koreans in his unit either before or after crossing the YALU River.
PW’s unit was intact and under the same chain of command now as it was prior to crossing the YALU.

3. LOCATION & ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
After entering KOREA from ANTUNG (MANCHURIA) on 20 Oct 50, the PW’s regiment travelled only at night, sleeping in fox holes during the day. They did not prepare any defensive positions during their travel South.
After travelling 5 days, PW’s unit was engaged in a battle for 1 day with UN Forces. Unit was forced to withdrew to an unknown location where it was again engaged in battle within 3 days time. Unit was then forced to withdraw due to heavy artillery fire by the enemy. PW remained there for 4 days and deserted his unit on 20 Oct 50.
PW heard from his Company political officer (政治將校) that the defeat of the NKA would endanger MANCHURIA, therefore, they came to aid the NKA.
PW heard from the same officer who told them that the 38th, 39th and 50th Armies came to KOREA (no detailed information about other units besides PW's 40th Army).

4. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
PW volunteered Aug 48 into the Nationalist Army at HUDEH-SHENG (湖北省). Without receiving any training, PW was assigned to the 125th Army, 265th Div.
PW was captured by the CCF at KWANG-TUNG-SHENG (廣東省) in Nov 49. PW was sent to PEI-HAI (北海) where he received 2 months of communist indoctrination. PW was assigned to the 40th Army, 119th Div, 356th Regt, 2nd Bn, 5th Co, Mortar Platoon.
Entire 40th Army moved to HAINAN-TAO (海南島) on 18 Feb 50, and was engaged in battle with the Nationalist Army for fifteen days.
The 40th Army moved to ANTUNG (安東) by train arriving in Aug 50 via KWANGTUNG SHENG and HANKOU (廣東省) (漢口).
After remaining in ANTUNG for 2 months, the 119th Div of the 40th Army departed from the City on foot on the evening of 20 Oct 50 and crossed the YALU River via the RR bridge on the same day.
PW was unable to give exact names of location, after they travelled five days in KOREA because of the unfamiliarity with KOREA.

5. PERSONALITIES:

Co CO (連長), 5th Co, 2nd Bn, 356th Regt, 119th Div, 40th Army.

6. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES
Food was very scarce. Each man in PW’s company brought 3 days ration when they crossed the YALU River on 20 Oct 50. After their rations were exhausted, they did not receive any food supply; therefore, they confiscated food from nearby villages as they advanced.
Each rifleman in PW's unit received one-issue of 78 rds small arms ammo prior to crossing the border, o/a 19 Oct 50. PW presumed that no additional ammo was issued to troops in KOREA.

7. ARMOR & ARTILLERY:
Artillery: PW observed approx 2 artillery pieces (cal, type unknown in the PW's 356th Regt after crossing the YALU River.

8. MORALE:
Morale of PW's Unit was low due to lack of food, clothing and long forced marches. They feared constant air strafing and bombings.
PW stated that 80% of the entire 40th Army were former Nationalist troops who did not want to come to fight for KOREA.

9. SIGNAL COMMUNICATION:
2 field telephones in the PW's Company were used Regt and the Company.
Runners were used below the company level.

10. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW did not volunteer for Korean service.
Instructions had never been given to CCF soldiers to appear to be volunteers if captured.
PW did not know anything about the Iron and Steel Brigade.

Plat Lar (班長) - 200,000 Yuan
Co CO (連長) - 300,000 Yuan
The Chinese are recruiting in MANCHURI (men between 18 and 30 yrs old).
PW believed that all former Nationalist soldiers, if captured, were conscripted into the CCF. Captured equipment was utilized by the CCF at the present time.
